well, rave, still if you consider them at some point listen before to loads and loads of others out here, only because some folks absolutely swear by them...
you need to decide what suits you! even i am a total devoted fan, i would never suggest to buy them blind, not as long as someone has the possibility to go on the listening quest himself, though. i just know to much how extremely vital that choice and investment is. the most vital and important ever made in a studio. (and the proper setting up!)

What about Adam A7?

My studio partner wants to upgrade his home studio from hes old KRKs. (About time)
He does not want Genelecs, even though we got it in my studio. He also got the smallest Gens that we use when we bring a small studio on the road. He read a lot about the common brands, and decided on the A7. But he hasn't purchased them yet.. Any last things he/we should know about?

A7s are 6.5". We are mostly doing dance music.

Understood. I was in a shop to preview them recently but the assistant failed so I will be going back before I part with any cash.

adams are good if you like ribbon tweeters (very particular sound!) the thing about adams is that it is commonly known to not have such a great production quality measure, you can easy end up with a not very well match pair if you are unlucky.

if they are matched, all is good, though.

anyways, go listen for yourself.

To late, he just got them. Well, good to know they are a safe bet, sound wise. Apparently the seem to run fine out of the box so far. Just got an SMS stating: "AHhh!" Looking forward to try mixing on them. I will stay with Gens at home for a long time, but its nice to have a second option down the street.

They are killer sounding for the price. But...

The quality is a joke for the price. Call this anecdotal if you want, but... I ordered a pair in '07. Didn't work out of the box. No sound out of one, volume didn't work on the other. Sweetwater overnighted me a replacement pair. They have worked mostly fine, until today, when the left one stopped making sound. I'm sorry but a 2.5 year old product that has been babied in a smoke free home studio should not do that.

Also, the only one of my friends who has a home studio also had A7s (he's why I got a pair). This same thing happened to his after one year - just cut out one day.

Who needs that bullshit from a > $1000 pair monitors. Ridiculous.

great monitors, often prefered by people that work mainly with accoustic material, they are no. 3 on my personal fave list, regarding near / midfields.

and yes, that is common with adam, when you are lucky and you like ribbon tweeters they are also great, but the stories about mediocre quality assurance are common, very common.

but again, monitors always listen to them yourself!

Interesting. We had some borrowed Dynaudios for part of our last album production session, and that was exactly my opinion of them. They sounded good, but not orgasmic for electronica, but orgasmic when listening to some classical music thru them.

^^^ sure it is subjective, but on the otherhand a very common opinion about dynos.

other than the bm5a, what other options are there for around a grand, if you don't want to make the jump to the genelec 8030 (which i think may sound toooo good anyway)?

genelecs are bruttally honest, they will stick any shit in a mix right in your face!
that is exactly what a good monitor is supposed to accomplish!

I own a pair of Dynaudio BM12a and I adore the sound of them. I preferred them over everything I tried. I really wasn't planning on spending that much on monitors when I was shopping but I just really really loved the sound of them that I ended up tripling my allocated budget . I do listen to a lot of acoustic stuff, post-rockish type stuff. I also tend to listen to electronica with timbres that are more on the organic tip to, I guess - so there might be some truth to what you guys are saying. I did feel some of the other monitors -events, genelics, mackies- were too 'hyped' (probably not the best word to use). The dyns just felt dead flat and honest to my ears. Everyone has different expectations, tastes, ears etc. Some people swear black-and-blue by KRK, I thought they sounded like sandpaper!

I spend $2000 on a used pair on 10" Genelec 1032s five years ago as an upgrade from my Alesis M1s. New they sold for $5000. Definitely happy with the purchase. I thought of getting Mackie 824s, but I felt I would eventually feel then need to upgrade those too, so I just went straight to the Genelecs, where there really is no upgrade from.

In hindsight I probably didn't need such big speaker though. I wanted 10" woofers for their extended bass frequency response so I wouldn't need a subwoofer. But for producing dance music you really do need a sub and I was actually given a Mackie SR150 by a friend who didn't need it. So now I have a monitoring system fit for a large loft in a 11x15 bedroom!

You have 1032s and you claim you need a sub for making dance music? oh my, oh my, treat your room, or get a smaller system for a tiny box room like you have, or simply GET SOME MIXING SKILLS, don't blame the tools if you don't have basic skills, really, call me an arse, but 1032s and you can't mix or set them up appropriate so they can actually work well... LOL

it is like owning a porsche and saying you can't drive fast.
