Actually, I'm fine hearing your suggestion. My asking about using my Aphex Dominator Model 720 Limiter is what started this part of the post going.
I also have a FMR RNC compressor that I can use, but I thought just limiting the peaks & turning up the overall signal would be better than compressing the signal. Your thoughts?

Limiting isn't necessarily a bad idea just as long as you aren't over squashing your transients. I prefer a soft compression at a 3:1 ratio or so with threshold around -10db and doing my best to keep the peaks no higher than -3db. Ideally, the compressor would be used as a safeguard and not as a way to crank the volume higher than you would if you didn't have compression, unless you are going for a specific compressed sound.

might be good for acoustic sources.. not conversions..
I don't consider 3:1 at -10db ' soft compression'..
even assuming it peaks at -6db..
the envelope will alter the louder parts while not touching the softer..
certainly not wanted for simply recording into digital..
record with no dynamics altering...normalize.
..then compress using a high percision software comp..
(preferably with an automatic envelope and resampling)

Many thanks for all who offered advice. It is much appreciated. I will try a few methods & see what works best for a given source.
I haven't digitized tapes in a long time, & I'm looking forward to eventually having all my old music & sounds available.

exactly.
if you've got a ton of digitizing to do, it makes no sense to digitize a processed version, especially since the digitizing is the time consuming part.
digitize first, process later. it also means you can try different things and batch process on your computer.
