That’s talking about Logic and what I find most mind blowing about that report is you wouldn’t be able to get anywhere near that many instances of ANYTHING in Live without it crashing. Looks like the lowest count there is 38. Go ahead and try to put 38 instances of anything useful in Live.Khazul wrote:Complete article at http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan11/a ... ok-air.htm

As a comparison, the 17?inch MacBook Pro I tested three years ago, which had a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor, managed 150 PlatinumVerbs and 54 Space Designers. Looking at software instances, the MacBook Air managed 144 Sculpture voices (18 instances each playing eight voices), 768 EXS24 voices (using 16?bit samples) with the filter disabled, and 448 voices with the filter enabled. The 2007 17?inch MacBook Pro was capable of 160 Sculpture voices, and 896 and 512 EXS24 voices with filter enabled and disabled respectively.

So this is like the swiss army knife of connections and you'll need all kinds of adapters to use with your current external hardware?
As it stands now there isn't anything on the market that uses this I/O directly, so once you get these adapters to use with your current external hardware it's pretty much zero value added other than they will work with their current bottleneck speed?
To get the most out of this at some point in the future you are going to have to replace all your external hardware with hardware that supports this I/O natively?
This sounds like classic Apple except for the fact they didn't already remove currently used I/Os. Glad that got that asshole move out of their system.

Re: new macbook pro w/ new I/O: could be DAW game changer
This is good info. The thing that I am hoping makes it a game-changer for DAW-land is that digital midi/audio interface companies will scramble to come out with products that support the I/O. 'Thunderbolt' == 'Light Peak' == primarily an Intel technology, so with any luck the next gen notebooks of all varieties will be sporting it as well as USB 3.0.
But I think the overall 'meh' is not warranted either. This is a bit of a turning point-- before you paid top dollar for Mac computers that were not at the very highest end of performing systems compared to what was out there.
Now this is definitely not the case, although you still pay a premium for the caressable design that LoopStationZebra craves so sweatily.

sweatily!!!!!
Speaking of the Air, I don't know of a SINGLE Live user on this forum who actually owns one and has reported in on performance.
In fact, I don't know of a single post anywhere in which someone is purported to be running Live.

Beats don't get the Air thinking it will get you laid! If it's a consolation prize for NOT getting laid, then I understand.
I had the same struggle, it looks so beautiful! But like Loops, the specs are lower than my 4 year old 2 ghz core duo macbook, and I am not going to take a performance HIT just for a piece of unbelievably beautiful gear.
But if had any money to burn I would get it.
I think I want to wait for the 2012 MBP at least, still need non-glossy screen and I want to see if they start including a small SSD for the OS as rumored for this one.
Or maybe I'll just go back to Windows for the vst's and Fruityloops.

Actually, I do find it rather disturbing that for the SHITLOAD of talk that the Air has gotten on this forum, no one has actually pulled the trigger and bought the fucking thing.

Some things to consider:
My current old 15” MBP is 2 GHz Duo processor
The new 13” MBP (not Air) is 2.7 GHz Duo (NOT QUAD - booo)
The 13” Air is 1.86 GHz Duo.
So given the above I think even with only 1.86 GHz on the Air the fact that the drive is SSD will bring it up to at least the performance of my current older MBP. The fact that the new 13” MBP isn’t a quad core makes it kind of meh. And I’m not really interested in another 15” or 17” MBP and the price associated with those.
People are talking like the Airs are little more capable than a pocket slot machine game.

Re: new macbook pro w/ new I/O: could be DAW game changer
I was all set to get a 17". But I am going to wait as long as possible. Quite disappointed with the price hike (up $200), and the need to add $50 for a non-glare. That's $2550 before tax! I would probably do that, but on top of this they insult me with a 5400 RPM drive. That means I have to spend another $250 for some RAM and a 7200. Deal breaker. I will find a way to work around my CPU problem on my 2007 2.2Ghz MBP.

Re: new macbook pro w/ new I/O: could be DAW game changer
As much as I am an Apple fanboy, I think the 17" laptops are stupid.
But also I think any laptop regardless of manufacturer that is over 15" is stupid. Far from portable...especially given the introduction of the iPad and lesser tablets. And at the that size point the price also starts making them undesirable as well...as noted.

For me, unfortunately, it's about the extra USB port
So many USB devices these days require their own bus (Maschine,Kore,Virus). Pissed off the 17" doesn't have 4 of them. I hear people saying the 17" is too big, and I wouldn't get it if I carried it on my shoulder alot. But really, it is not that much bigger than the 15"
