RIP Plastic MacBook

Well, after my MBP's trackpad has taken a shit and me lying to myself for many years that my main computer needs to be portable, I'm going to get a 27" iMac. You get so much more bang for your buck between the low spec 27" iMac and the high spec. 15" MBP (without customizing either).

2.7 GHz instead of 2.2 GHz
1T drive instead of 750G
12 more inches of screen real estate
4 USB ports instead of 2
2 thunderbolt ports instead of 1
And it's $500 cheaper

I already have an iPhone, iPad, and Air. Why do I need another portable device? Answer: I don't.

I have an i7 iMac with 8GB ram , tis a great buy, just make sure you get the added cover

I can pony up the extra $200 to go from 4G of RAM to 8G, but my bank account is unconvinced the i7 chip is with worth an extra $500.

That would make the iMac $2,400.

But in other option news, it’s not really that unreasonable to go from a 1T drive to a 2T drive for an extra $150, especially considering it’s Apple who usually charges something offensive for that type of upgrade.

The plastic MacBook really helped Ableton. Back in the dark ages the PC vs. Mac rants were far worse, and the thing that sucked most about it was that PCs really were more powerful and whatnot.

too true - and I was using PCs back then for that reason.... it was a white macbook that made me make the switch and on the odd occasion since then when I've been forced to spend hours tearing my hair out on a friend's PC trying to find the reason for some kind of driver conflict I have felt smugly satisfied to go back to my mac.

How many more FireWire interfaces do you think were sold because of the old plastic MacBooks? The somewhat vast pro audio landscape we have today was greatly impacted by that little plastic affordable computer.

It's a bummer that it's gone, but what needs to happen now is that pro audio manufacturers need to adopt Thunderbolt, and try to hit that magic $299 price point. I'm looking at you, M-Audio. Who's going to make the Thunderbolt audio/midi interface that we all need? Specs:

One thing I will say, on the white MB the 6 pin FW400 used to shit me to tears having to turn the computer off to plug/unplug my FW410- something the FW800 connector addressed - so that's something else I'm much happier with the new MBP about. They should have made a much bigger noise about that though - I discovered it almost by accident on the M-Audio forum buried in a thread somewhere...

Truth. But at least with thunderbolt you can continue to use your current hardware, unlike when they suddenly ditched SCSI and serial in favor of USB and firewire and there was absolutely no external hardware using that protocol at the time.

Must admit Im allmost tempted by the 13 as a lightweight DJing laptop (for traktor).
