New Macbook Pros

The Lenovo U400 with intel i7 and 14 inch screen , is built just like the macbook pro . I've seen the Dell 15XPSz and the Samsung 7 series too ( not even close !! ) , but the Lenovo U400 is solid aluminum just like the Macbook pros . If you don't use Logic or Mac only plugins , you should go to Best Buy or where ever just to compare it to the Macbook and check it out !!!

no firewire and no line in, how can you compare it to a MBP?

no but we use firewire, so this lenovo is nothing close to a MBP (plus it has totally badly placed ports and a cd drive that is of no use in 2012)

Ok, wow I took a few days off from the internet and came back to this wild topic. Who knew it'd blow up (this might be the most success I've ever had in regards to music). Anyway, let me clarify why I'd want an optical drive. Samples. Yes I know you can buy samples online. I'm talking about clips of songs you've ripped from your CD into WAV format. Yeah it's more convenient to pay 99 cents for The Funky Drummer mp3 on iTunes... but the audio quality sucks. NO QUESTIONS ABOUT IT. For a mere 5-7 bucks you can get the entire CD and rip it as WAV format for sampling.

and for the price of 2 cd's in store you can buy any usb cd player, really, optical media is dead since 2009, it's just a waste of real estate that can accomodate another HD (removed the cd in my MBP the day after i bought it and replaced it with a second 500GB HD)

Yeah, I'm really not complaining about the price myself, per se, but more about the price for a lot of people who hate being nickeled and dimed. Also, just another usb peripheral taking up space.

Also, I don't buy into the fact that physical cd's are dead. They still sell a lot. Compared to 2001? Yeah it's down, but last year physical cd sales were up from 2010. It also sounds WAY better than an mp3 of any type.

Windows7 on the Lenovo U400 and get a usb2 audio interface ( focusrite scarlet 2i2 )for less than that macbook pro , If you worried about viruses or want a eye candy OS , make a 20gb partition at the end of you hdd for Ubuntu or Mint to get on the net ? That Lenovo U400 is way nicer than the 13 in or 15 in macbook pro imho , you could also crack that bad boy open and put a 120gb ssd in there too. Now those 17 inch macbook pros are nice though !! Oh and firewire is on its way out !!

still no firewire is a no go, i dont think rme makes cheap usb interfaces, and the MOTU usb are not as good as the firewire

you are SO far from reality, most pro use firewire drives, soundcards, video acquisition, so firewire is all but dead, if anything, it's more alive than ever

Disagree unfortunately (I use a Firewire400 card myself). I think the writing is on the wall for firewire, with USB3 and Thunderbolt on the way, seems like less and less companies are releasing firewire compatible soundcards these days.

I don't think firewire is completely dead, but the big thing that made firewire the #1 choice for audio cards was horrible USB for years. It wasn't until about 4-5 years ago that USB cards came out that had more than 4 audio ins etc. that weren't almost useless. Recently they have USB 2 audio cards that are comparable to the Fireface 800, Resetta etc. That, is what will kill firewire, because USB 2 is much cheaper to implement in a computer, firewire has licensing fees from IBM I believe?
USB 3 will probably become the standard for audio, Thunderbolt has $50+ cables to start....

If firewire weren't on it's last leg then companies like Motu, RME, and Apogee wouldn't be focusing their efforts on USB audio technology and making most of their latest offerings either USB or Hybrid USB/Firewire. The two higher-end companies that seem to be sticking with firewire for now are Prism Sound and Universal Audio. However, Prism Sound says they've successfully tested the Orpheus with Sonnet's thunderbolt adapters and Universal Audio has a slot for an optional thunderbolt card already built into the Apollo, even though the card is not available yet.
