A touchpad, I think you mean? Rather than integrated into the laptop, how about an array of touchpads, say 8 x 16 that you can assign however, plug in via USB. Intercessory software to interpret the x-y values and to allow turning off some of the pads when not needed, also masking of x or y to register one or the other, also recognize "taps" or not, and assignment to MIDI.This idea would be cool if it were implemented as a software application housed in a touchscreen MIDI controller. Of course, it would be a bad idea if you really really like the touchy feely of knobs/faders etc.
I have been using my touchscreen monitor and find it loads of fun (although there is room for imrovements) so I could tolerate a touchscreen keyboard, drum pads, knobs, faders etc. etc.
I am picturing a Nintendo DS styled laptop where there are 2 screens, the top would be the DAW GUI and the bottom is the touchscreen controller as opposed to a standard QWERTY keyboard. So you use the bottom touchscreen to connect modules together any way you like (like MAWZER) and have at it. Faders, knobs, switches, buttons, drum pads, crossfaders, synth keyboard etc. etc.
Talk about portable and versatile!
