You're right eddiex! His vocal range is absolutely amazing... Gabriel has been a favourite of mine ever since 'Solsbury Hill' and I had a lot of early Genesis albums too, so yes, quite an event! Interestingly, about a month later Genesis played at the same venue. They were great too in their own way, especially as they had Chester Thompson on drums as well. Chester Thompson played drums for Zappa back in the "One Size Fits All" days and it was his birthday the night of the show in Melbourne. as an after thought... i started to mention how little it surprises me that The Eagles were meh. but i didn't edit the post because there was no need for them to bring it down.
having said that, i gave a nod of i-can-see-that when you said Melissa Etheridge put on a better show. she is the kind of artist i wouldn't try to see, but a live show with musicians that actually have talent, not just persona, is a beautiful thing... i liken it to when you get ready to haul ass, but are finishing your last drink, when karaoke night starts at some bar... and it's one of those rare nights where the crowd is littered with people that sing a song on par or almost better than the original artist - nothing else matters as that wave of appreciation for the music passes through you. i guess that's what makes us love it.
