these guys are currently doing cheap hi-md's. $199 AU bundle packs inc. microphone. With exchange rates that should get most of you down to about $150 or so.

I think you have to know what do you want to do. If you want hi-fi recordings, then a full blown setup with a decent condenser microphone will be needed. This category includes laptop+soundcard+microphone, or dedicated recorders with phantom power.

If you want good quality, but prefer something simpler, there are recorders with onboard stereo mics (such as the marantz mentioned, edirol, etc, etc).

If you just want to get incidental sounds, top quality is not your goal, and don't want to be carrying around all that luggage, then you should get a MD player with recorder, or an mp3 player with onboard mic (I got one, and I'm really happy with it!!!). I mean, something you can listen music to, and if you happen to come across some interesting sound on the street, bam! record it right away, no need to be "prepared".

I do the same as Pitch Black, just record onto my mini-DV camera, then capture the tape to Final Cut Pro, then export the audio from Final Cut. I have a Panasonic PG200 camera and a Sony m908 mic, and it works pretty well. Some things sound great, other things sound alright.

I think, all told, the portable recorder market isn't technologically where the public wants it. I've personally sold mounds of minidiscs, Edirol r1s, PMD660s, Micro Tracks, etc, etc... The general consensus from my customers is that there is something wrong with all of them.

If only we could all afford Sound Devices 744Ts...

They are actually about $400 or a little bit less street price. Then you've got to get a Compact Flash card becuase the one it comes with is only like 16mb or something. But the great news is that you can use cards up to 4gb! That's like hours and hours of recording at full 24/96! :D :D :D
