2) Financially, this will invite more folks to use Live perhaps more than any other new feature since Live was originally released to the public. All the FinalScratch/Serato/Traktor etc's that use Live while making their music now have no excuse whatsoever to not use it on stage. Of course the auto-beat matching accuracy will be the true determining factor, MP3 support opens the flood gates for new users with Ableton.
MP3 to Ableton will be like the iPod to Apple.
That's it. They're trying to INCREASE their market share, not just please old jaded users like me who bought version 1.
That said, I think the inclusion of mp3 support stinks. The more people "DJing" with live, the less I have to gloat and condescend about to vinyl DJs. The vinyl snobs, who begrudgingly respect what an improvised music creator can do with Live, will have reams of "snob-ammo" to rain down on Live users once 9 year old billy pulls his finger out of his nose and starts DJing his bootlegged mp3 collection with the software that I use.
Am I a snob myself? You bet your frickin arse I am. Do a search on this forum on my rants on DJs in general, and you'll see. I just dread the lowest common denominator using the software I use, because of the inevitable association.
BUT:
Ableton would have been stupid to not include mp3 support. I don't know if Ableton is a publically traded company, but if I were a shareholder, I would DEMAND that the next version include mp3 support. It's all about their corporate survival. which I support. Because as long as Ableton survives, they will keep bringing cool stuff to my computer.
NOW: Those shareholders are going to start screaming "Get this prog working properly on a Mac!"
