I've downloaded some of your sets and love them. I can't seem to find any of the royalty free samples. I am particularly after field recordings.
I'm also wondering how you work with Ableton Live, Live? any tips, .als, etc?
Thanks
Hi, Nightrider. Glad you like the sets.
The sample zips were moved last week (details below);
there are a mix of sounds in the zips, including field
recordings. When I am working with Ableton Live for something
that has to be an exact length (TV/radio commercial, score
for film, theatre, etc, that sort of thing), I'll go right to
building in arrangement view. But for recording my own
material for non-commercial purposes (ie doesn't need
a specific length because it isn't for a defined commercial
project such as TV, radio, etc; ie it is just a song for
an album or compilation or something like that), I'll just
jam in session view while recording the
results and then go into arrangment view and edit it
down to something I like. Ditto for live performances
(all the live sets on my site, btw, are 100% completely
"as performed" with no overdubs or edits after the fact):
I do my live performances completely in session view
and record them while I'm doing them (in Live, of course

),
then save the set after the show as a self-contained file.
Then if/when time permits (cos especially after recording
all my live sets on a tour I'm going to have a ton of
long self-contained sets to go through!), I'll go back and see if there
are any potential "songs" in there (cos my live performances
are jams, not duplications or attempted duplications of
already-recorded songs I've done.). If I hear any good bits
(I'm in arrangement view at this point), I'll isolate that
section and see if I can transform it into a song. Thus,
many of my releases (
http://andrew-duke.com is my
site and you can click on the album covers to go to
the label site where they often have previews--or full
downloads for my Second Opinion album and Oscar The
Grouch album and 09X90 EP, so lots of full stuff there
too) are the result of a live performance that I "buffed
up" after the fact in arrangement view. Occasionally I'll
get really lucky and a song released onan album or
compilation is taken directly from arrangment view after
recording a live gig in Live and I haven't had to do any
post-production. Always nice when that happens!
Anyway, hope this helps. I'll see about posting some
other stuff, .als, etc if/when time permits.
Take care. Andrew PS Here is the update re: new zips:
A new round of the sound design/production class I'm teaching
(called Making Music With Computers by the college, thus
MMWC for short) starts tonight; I'm making some of my
audio-files-for-manglin' available for these students, too. I'm also
making them available to anyone else who wants to use 'em (links
below). If you missed out on them the first
time I posted (they're royalty-free), here's the download info:

http://andrew-duke.com/MMWCassignment2audio.zip
(Note: the old zip locations are no longer valid).

All I ask is that if you use of my samples in anything that you post a link so
we can check out the results.
A production contest of sorts has been set up by one of the members
on the mnml.nl forum using the above samples I made; here's the thread
