Just as an aside, and really not a good one, the word "terrorism" or derivatives thereof appear 24 times on that single page. But then again there's also a handy-dandy link to Central Command where we can look at all the brave soldiers in tanks...

I don't feel sorry for Tookie, I don't claim to know hoodunnit, I feel sorry for any nation that reverts to the tried and tested medieval eye-for-an-eye approach. That's really going a bit too old-skool for me.

I hear ya man, I live in Victoria, BC, Canada (not too far from you). I used to visit the US at least 3 times a year or more (Vegas, Cali, Seattle). I can honestly say that I haven't been across the border now for over 3 years. The thought of even spending a weekend in the US makes me cringe!

IMO, getting tough on "gangstas in da hood" may help to eliminate the violent and selfish street culture that Williams represented that makes me embarassed to be an American. Kudos on him, though, for his bookwriting and attempts to sway others away from this evil. Hopefully his death will be a further deterrent to others.

Why is it that whenever something happens that involves a person of color that it is race that is somehow involved? Doesn't personal accountablility and responsibility for one's actions account for anything? I am so #$%^& sick of people (black AND white) hiding behind the race issue. While it would be false to say that racism in our society doesn't exist, there comes a point that we have to just stop this excuse that is far from true.

Unfortunately, it's not only race that generates unfair discrimination.

Williams should've gotten the same needle they should've used on OJ.

seldom does any kind of utopian "dream" like democracy work in reality. Too many humans act instinctively and not very "enlightenend"

Just read "the communist manifesto" by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engles, that is a utopian vision, but what did it become?? Communism. China and the former Soviet union have been the Big ones who took it on, although Marx himself imagined it to be Germany, Britain, USA - highly industrialised nations (it was written in 1850s...) So Communism only really exists any more in China on a large scale and there it seems they are more capitalist than communist now days.

It is the same for all cultures on this Earth that there is someone who is suffering an injustice, because in any kind of "majority rules" situation, there will always be someone who is not represented.

We are as humans capable of a really good level of compasion, but we are still only animals and selfish at heart. so what?? It is a human trait to revere selfLESSness and encourage it always, but then that is socialisation.

So this guy did wrong but then went good right? He one a nobel prize so his "right" must have been looked at fairly thoroughly.

Does that "redeem" him from his past wrongs?? Depends if as a society we are at all interested in people still being able to offer something after they have already been judged for something else. Really, that's it. Is there any reason to not just get them out of sight, out of mind? Kill em, get em out the way then talk of it no more?? Or keep them in Baddie school/Jail?

Personally I think "do what thou wilt but harm none" should be the whole law in 21st Century, post Christian/Religious Earth.

Lets just say for one second that all religions are wrong. Darwin was right and evolution is right. Where does that leave our systems of justice??

If none of these religious texts can be regarded as fairly "the word of god" then they are worth nothing judicially and so it is therefore completely unfair to force ANY living thing to abide by one particular faith.

So "do what you like BUT HARM NONE" if the whole focus of the law is to prove what constitiutes "HARM" and whether one has violated that right in another, then if one is found to "harm" another it is decided how they are dealt with.

I think in this day and age it is reasonable for any intelligent being to expect that level of sanity.

So maybe death penalty is too close to the state harming an individual, but if they dont it costs the tax payer money to keep them in prison and they mix with other "harmers" so it "harms" society to allow this to happen.......and so on, ad infinitum.

There is no right answer.

I personally believe in the deterrent power of capital punishment. It won't cleanse the US of all evil parasites nor prevent the spawning of new ones, but it would be a start. And if these individuals are genetically predisposed to psychopathic violence and deterrence doesn't work, natural selection will then take them out of the gene pool to the benefit of our future society.

Spend the prison money saved on inner-city education and opportunities to eliminate that as an excuse/cause.

My opinion only, which is unsubstantiated by facts.

see that's the weird thing...

we got given some pet rats and I've been reading about them, including a bit about breeding them....

reading about how if you breed from an animal with a good nature and nice fur you have a good chance of getting the same etc...

there are a few basic things like that and it has made me really think about the fact that we're no different. Maybe a bit more sophisticated, but still we're not as advanced as we'd like to think...

so are we "bred" in the same ways?

Are the undesirables with underpriviledged upbringings a bad breed?
