The School Of Hard Knocks is a tough curriculum and a great way to learn. Thanks for the encouragement, I'll name my first plug-in The Angstromiser :D

DKushner and Wilxon have it correct. In simple terms; if you can't get a fine recording at 24/44.1, then forget about working in anything higher.
