I can't say I agree with many of the film choices people have recommended, though you probably won't agree with mine. If you want a laugh, I suggest:

All the Austen Power movies, Dumb and Dumber (comedy classic in my opinion), There's Something About Mary, The Life Of Brian, Monty Python And The Holy Grail.

For something a bit more "serious" then:

The Fisher King, Pulp Fiction, From Dusk to Dawn 1, The Godfather, The Pianist, Scarface.

Actually, there are loads more excellent movies!!!

also, road trip always goes down well.. but these are all oldies, nothing much fun on dvd at the minute imo

jackass the movie 2 is due to be released in cinmeas in september though, and a film staring samuel l jackson called 'snakes on a plane' is due in the next few months too

I think Wong Kar-Wei's "In the Mood for Love" is amazing, as are Chungking Express and Fallen Angels.

Mulholland Drive is top, as are Big Lebowski, Elephant, Memento.

If you are into music at all, get the atmospherically dense "Step Across the Border" about multi-instrumentalist Fred Frith. Other music film: "Stop Making Sense" (Talking Heads)

Welles' "The trial" (F. Kafka) is well worth watching more than once.

I really like the stuff that Lalo Shifrin did the music for, such as "Bullit" and "Dirty Harry".

I love "'This is Spinal Tap" too.

Definitely check out Kusturica's "Underground" and "Black Cat White Cat" and "Time of the Gypsys".

Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf - Mike Nichols directing Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton as a worn out couple of alcoholics. The wife and I love to get drunk to this movie, pure gold.

Full Metal Jacket - My favorite Kubrick, all his stuff is good though, this one is highly sample-able.

Office Space - If you've ever worked in an office, this is a must see. This movie keeps me sane at work.

Endless Summer - The best surf movie ever as well as one of the best documentaries ever. Filmed when surfing was just a weird sport, no attitude, just two guys travelling the world in 1966 looking for waves. The sequel is pretty good too.

Cool Hand Luke - Paul Newman as a man who refuses to give in to 'the man'.

Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars - This was Bowie's last concert as 'the man who fell from the sky' but the audience didn't know it until the end of the movie. Shot by DA Pennybaker, one of the best documentary makers ever. Guitarist Mick Ronson is amazing.

Underworld Live: Everything Everything - Underworld live circa 2000, need I say more?

Glengarry Glen Ross - Also called Death Of A Fucking Salesman. All star cast, amazing dialog.
