Well, being in the recording game for a coupla decades and remembering having to drop around 20 grand on a 16 track tape recorder, it seems like somewhat of a bargain to me!

yeah I had the same thought when I thought about how much I spent on my sampler in 1997 - it was alot more than $200 US - in fact it was probably 6 or 7 times that and did alot less and I had to stare at this stupid little LCD screen and make do with 32 (up to 128) measily MB of ram and a 1GB HD

By this measure *all* software is a bargain and nobody should ever complain about the price. A more reasonable comparison would be Sampler vs the other soft samplers available now.

Really though, it's not the price of any of Live's parts that bugs me - it's that I'm going to have to put up with the crude automation system, the lack of aliased clips, recording automation into session view, very limited arrange tools etc etc. for another year at least.

well I think the point is you dont "have to" - it's up to you personally to decide if you want the good things enough to live without the others

It's exactly the opposite - the things that Live 6 "fixes" I could mostly have already fixed by buying plugins. The things I do "have to" live with are all the limitations in the core app that weren't addressed.

Yes, but if you want Sampler, tack on another $199.

I strongly feel that if you buy sampler and the boxed upgrade that one should not have to pay the hundred dollars for the library. That would be reasonable in my opinon, especially for us faithfuls. It sure sucks that I am tempted to wait six months for a Holiday package or that I am penalized for already being a loyal customer.

i guess i'll be forking it all over... i'm all about supporting this company but i have to admit it feels like a bit too much. i think the hardware comparisons in price don't wash, even though i have waved that flag a few times, and been an analog studio owner myself. even just 50 bucks less for a total upgrade would make me feel differently...350 feels much more appropriate. bah....anyway,this is the only post i'll allow myself to make on the subject.

Right- for $100 more. I paid extra for the 5 box last year, only to have the Library released to everyone. It would be nice if those of us that purchase the box set and the sampler have this discounted. I'm with you completely on discounts for registered users that purchased the L5 box, but I think the abes have a different pricing scheme. The $100 more is for the box and CD's and (probably) stickers and nice printed manual, packaging, shipping etc. I think (and maybe I'm wrong here), the lack of EIC inclusion for the d/l only crowd is because of size considerations, like maybe the EIC comes on one or 2 huge DVD's, so they figure it's not feasible for download. That's why I was saying they should make the d/l of the EIC optional regardless of file size. Either way, we both agree there shoudl be more of a break for L5 registered owners and maybe even more of a breal for boxed version regostered owners.

If size is a concern, why not release the EIC as a bittorrent ala the movie studios now? Solves the issue nicely for those with broadband who don't want to wait.

You forget probably about 20 people with salaries at around 100K a year at least.... basically around 2 million a year in overhead at least, if not more. Plus the original 26 million it took to buy Emagic in the first place. Cupertino is expensive. I know of somebody who codes HTML for Apple at $90 an hour!

I run a small business, I know it seems like all you're paying for is a CD and box, but that's simply not true, you're also paying for the salaries of the employees that will bring Logic into the next century, it's the nature of software, it's a rental agreement. Also one of the valid reasons that PC Logic users were upset.

All this makes me think that I should just go ahead and get the dammed box set and Sampler. Whether I like it or not, the company I like is dependent on their success.
