You and others have tons of valid points.supster wrote:no .. hambone you need to follow the reasoning of what im saying all the way through - and not reduce it to assume that we are saying "Live 6 has no potential for innovation by DJs"hambone1 wrote:I disagree. There's HUGE potential for innovative DJs that can think 'outside the box'. Now even more so with 6 and Sampler, macros, etc.

My response was to the OP's original post and thread subject.
i don't mean this to sound snarky (seriously), but my solution for this is to know my tunes. i know this may sound simplistic, but having djed vinyl for 11 years, i don't have a "preview" function on my record box. i have to rely on my knowledge of the music i have, and it's worked well for me.supster wrote:
Freedom to choose the "right track" for the moment among hundreds or thousands of tracks needs a real preview function that can skip thru the file
.
And when doing this, do you listen from the very beginning of the track each time, or needle drop a few places deeper in the record once it's kicking to check it out? Of course you need to know your tunes, but with vinyl you have the option of starting playback anywhere instantly to quickly check a track's compatibility. You can't do this in Live currently without loading all your tunes into the Session view.djshiva wrote:

i have to run thru the crate, grab a record i think will work, and drop it on the deck to check. if it works, great. if not...back 2 the crate.
oh totally. like i said, i DO see the reason why people want this function, and it does make sense. not poopooing the needs of those asking for this.Tarekith wrote:And when doing this, do you listen from the very beginning of the track each time, or needle drop a few places deeper in the record once it's kicking to check it out? yeh, it would be nice to have a preview like they're saying - I've thought that alot of times - not just for djing tracks either - vocal recordings is a big one as they're usually completely silent until a good few bars in - listening through old recordings would be a million times easiernoisetonepause wrote:The few times I've DJd out (with Live), I've kept a special cue track. So I'll think of a tune that'll fit, find it in my crate/browse, put it on the cue track/turntable, and try it out on headphones. Works nice.
What you gonna do when you got sent 40 tracks the day before the gig and downloaded 20 from producers off ya server on the daydjshiva wrote:but there is something to be said for knowing your tunes. even if the only option you have is a cue channel, that narrows things down quite a bit and makes the process quicker.

seriously, i think you are overthinking it if you are seriouswell, actually yes ... yes it doesdjshiva wrote:i don't mean this to sound snarky (seriously), but my solution for this is to know my tunes.

dude: digital files dont have colored sleeves and labels. just text. Live doesnt even have color distinctions to file names in the browser yet.
its totally different trying to scan and read thru all of that, than it is seeing "the yellow record with the cool font on it that would be perfect right now"
so my next question is, is ableton djing spoiling djs by allowing them to have more music available and rely less on their instincts and knowledge of their tunes? (i say this half facetiously and half seriously, by the way)
Tarekith wrote:I just want a little playback slider that represents the entire length of the recording you are previewing. Then you could just drag the playback marker any where in the file, and playback would start according to the quantize setting as it is now.
Superimpose it over a small waveform display of the file, and I'd be REALLY happy
