According to this link, seagate momentus 7200 drives are only available up to 100GB. Am I missing something?

That's the 7200.1 drive. Scroll down and click on the momentus 7200.2 drive. They're available up to 160bg gb. I'm just not sure if they're shipping yet, but I'd like to find out.

above else folks, dont worry about the out-datedness, software doesn't all of a sudden slow down when a new computer is released!
dont follow the ratrace of upgrading to the latest/greatest... its just pointless

Are they right? Should I be using an external drive anyway? Am I stupid for worrying about the internal drive? I'm sure external is better but I don't want to HAVE to use one.
Yes, you should. No, you don't HAVE to use one, but you will ultimately have much more performance power with it than without it. Think about it, you're dividing up the work between two drives. If everyting's all on one drive, that drive head is working like a mutha trying to to run the apps, record incoming audio or midi while simultaneously playing it all back, while accessing your sound libraries or streaming etc...your performance will
definitely suffer, proportional to the complexity of your project.
Therefore, an internal 5400rpm is JUST FINE so long as you also have an external 7200rpm.

Bah, 5400 internal is more than enough for most audio work. I use a 4200 in my HP laptop for my production stuff and it's never been an issue running 20+ stereo 24bit tracks. People freak out too much about HD speed for no reason IMVHO. You'd have to be needing some serious track counts to even start worrying about a 5400 drve not being fast enough, and if that's the case you should be looking at a Mac Pro or other desktop anyway.
That being said, I can't wait to go get my new MBP tonight

I'd take to think the same. The other day I did a test, and I could launch close to 30 audio tracks at the same time without having hard disk overload. Needless to say, it was just a test, no plugins, or such, but you get the idea. Echo IndigoDJ at 512 samples, 5400rpm hard drive, Centrino 1.6Ghz, 768Mb RAM.

5400 probably not so bad - my single processor AMD 3200+ starts to get funny with loads of plugs and 20 + audio tracks (even at 1024 or higher) with a 7200 hd
When it comes to the MacBook Pro I bet the duocore juice will make up amptly for the the slwoer HD speed
curious though on playing back actual tracks in Ableton and programs like Torq?

I don't really think the processor extra speed would do much in this case. Hard disk drives data transfer rates are mostly limited by rpm speed and plates storage capacity, as well as cache. Bigger sized plates allow for more info to be grabbed at one time.
You can have the fastest CPU on earth, and drive it at 1% and you will still get HD overloads if you're trying to stream more data than what the HD subsystem can handle.
How many of you are defragmenting hard drives? I was getting some spikes on a set, after defragmenting, i got a much smoother performance.
