while not having the live capabilities of ableton's app I am going to have a look at it for producing webcontent and (yes) soundtracks...

come on ableton, don't let them overtake...
...just trying to figure out how to make my computer sing....

i voted YES

i use fruityloops rewired into live but would much prefer to use a built in sequencer. (midi clips could work beautifully!)

Midi capabilities in live such as in ACID 4

Post by Nikkeinomura » Sat Feb 07, 2004 12:28 am

If in the future Live 4 I'll find midi capabilities and VSTi support (like the simple operations that is possible to perform on ACID 4) I'll abandon ACID in order to buy Live 4.

Nobody wants (external) midi more than me, but in the meantime I've got a bit of a workaround going. I'm running Logic on the same machine and using Touch Tracks. Booting LIVE first so as not to invoke ReWire. All the audio drivers in Logic are disabled and RAM allocation to Logic is 60Mb. Both apps are chasing external midi clock from my controller kbd.

Running midi only, Logic doesn't seem to be taking f-all performance away from LIVE, and the whole system seems to be as stable as LIVE by itself.

I have Touch Tracks sequences and LIVE scenes assigned to the same notes so that they fire together. Once loaded, I never have to touch or even look at Logic - in fact, I have it completely covered by the LIVE window apart from a giant bar counter that I can see from 10 feet away (just to confirm that Logic is ticking over). I have set up LIVE so that I don't have to look at the computer when I'm playing so its gonna be off to the side. Rock n Roll maaaan!

I'm really jazzed about this new setup. Been tweaking it up for the last 2 weeks now. I'm going to be using it when my band plays live to trigger external Akai samplers and video.
But it will be SOOOO much nicer when its all in the one app :D :D :D

cheers

YES FOR MIDI!
This would mean I could finally be able to run LIVE and Reason and also be able to control all my external synths and the lighting cues! I hope this arrives sooner than later.

this has already been said, i think, but just adding my bit..

please, please, please could you incorporate `midi controller clips`, sort of controller data within a clip. the clip could have say, fixed controller data of pitch bend of 20, control no 64 of 100, control no 35 of 50, velocity of 70, etc, so whenever i trigger the clip, this data gets sent to the midi channel set on the clip. so i can control my fx and jp with live, each beat having a seperate fx config - watch that through my tc stuff......... this could also benefit from the clips being able to go down to -100db on the volume controller. (it may be the case on live3, but i dont have this, yet),
so i could run a seperate track of midi controller data by playing live..

- i think this will push forward the already good style of live soooooo much forward, helps a lot.

this would make me upgrade now, for sure. i only have the delta version
- hopefully not for long)

thanks.

This was posted to another forum but belongs in this discussion...

What is missing in this discussion is the fact that the paradigm shift is not merely 'elastic audio' but the Sessions view. For me the break away from a linear 'piano-roll' formatted tool is the key to Ableton Live which I truly love. I love it so much I do not want to be forced outside it thereby breaking my creative output. I Own DP4. I am looking at Plogue Biddle, Numerology Logic et.al. Reason and the other 'Rack' simulators force you to use there synths..great if you like 'their synths'...

But to my knowledge, and if anyone knows of a Mac solution PLEASE, PLEASE let me know of it, ALL of these products behave in a linear piano-roll paradigm, therefore rendering them useless.

I for one am not looking for the be-all-end-all midi sequencer. Merely the ability to fire off midi sequences with a scene. as I am doing with audio. This would let me build a library of midi sequences as I have a library of audio 'sequences'. The nay sayers are in my opinion looking to closely to there own wishlist.

We all have a wishlist....loop without warp, reverse-loop, extending loopmarkers past the audio to put too short loops back in a better reference, master solo disengage, more sends (I work in surround), non paired outputs so I can choose ANY combination of outs as a given "pair", preference page that can remember so if my rack is not powered up it will default to (in my case) core audio....

Everyone has a set of desires that we would like to see to allow us to be more creative with our tools. But please look past yourselves and realize that other users have valid points regardless of how you work. I hope that Ableton as a team is smart enough to see past YOU and implement some of the mandatory features to allow their customers to solve what I see as insolvable any other way. And again if someone knows of a solution PLEASE tell me.

One post gave a very nice jpg (www.david-e.de/Live_4.jpg) as to what this might look like. If you do not use midi great ! Don't use it, just as I may never use some feature which you rely on daily. But people, we are all here trying to create, please stop trying to screw the rest of us who have shown a strong need for a particular feature.

Thanks and try to understand. Maybe we will help you in support of that feature you have wanted...

OSX users, theres a 'better way'

Post by fugu » Tue May 11, 2004 9:08 pm

yo,

all the OSX Live users here looking for MIDI capabilities in Live (a huge mistake IMHO, keep Live Audio!) should check out Numerology.

Hands down the most interesting OSX midi application so far, it does things to midi that were previously impossible and is a Perfect compliment in theory and in practice to Live. It's also inexpensive, and for sure is stable.

There is no comparable windows application i know of, sorry windows users.

I understand the want to have Live as the single interface application, sort of a post-digital revolution DAW, but why reinvent the wheel, Ableton, you've got a great product, don't muss it up by getting away from the core mission, ya'll do it very well so far.

hope this helps,

fugu

MIDI clips would rock. Editing can be done external. Same as with audio.

MIDI out of Ableton would rock

Post by DJADD » Sat May 15, 2004 6:40 pm

I really haven't had any complaints about the setup we use now, but the thought of being able to control my video clips using MIDI from Live makes me look forward to a little more control during our live gigs, not to mention in the studio. I hope that the tidbits I've read about plastikman's getup gets translated into a great update for us!

I've been a Live user since 1.0, and every step forward has just brought more fun to the process!

Midi-Looping ------- A MUST!!!!!

Post by zam » Fri May 21, 2004 11:45 am

I think, Ableton has to offer simple Midi-Sequenze-Looping before someone other overtakes here! Even in combination with Reason - it would be a great and powerfull duo if Live could send Midi-Loops to the rack-instruments. I would never need any other tool on Stage!
And of course - also a "must" for VJing, e.g. with Arkaos VJ!

The more time goes by - I am thinking of dropping Live and use different gear, sorry - but that's the fact!
