Hey Monkey,
I think he's right! You sound like you might be looking to be convinced that macs are worth it. I'm as tired of everyone else here about mac v pc debates. But you pose a good question as to why personally people really feel there is a choice. I can't really say macs are better than pcs. I just know they are better for me. MUCH better.
Thanks for the input, and MacBoob could well be right, maybe I am leaning towards a mac. I've been put off in the past mainly due to fuckwits telling me how 'cool' they are without giving any real answers as to why they are so good, and also because of a certain amount of anti-microsoft spiel, which again is a crap argument - for all their flaws, microsoft have without doubt added a phenomenal amount of advancements within IT in the past (and also produce the .NET development tools I use on a daily basis to earn a living, but that's another story...). However, on the microsoft theme, I think Vista is the biggest pile of shit I've ever seen, completely unnecessary yet will soon be forced on everyone whether they like it or not, so I guess I'm more open to switching working environments. It's just the joining the mac club that makes me feel a bit uneasy, it has a whiff of elitism to it that I'd rather avoid. I'd also have to start from scratch buying all the audio software.
To post a more serious answer.
UNtil november last year i had a lifebook from fujitsu siemens. A good powerful laptop, but when i started a clip in live it would struggle, get a cpu spike, and then glitch. Then it would be fine for about 10 - 30 mins bfore doing it again.
big problem when playing gigs.
I tried everyhing - new HD, Ram, Soundcards, reinstall, cubase, audition, standalone vst's and still this would happen in all progs.
In the end i caved in. I didnt like the idea of learning a new OS - for that reason i stayed away from OSX for so long. As soon as the C2D's came out i bought one.
Windows was/is still being used in Parallels, i used windows a lot at first but now its just an engine so i can still use fruityloops and audition.
OSX when you get the hang of it is just a fantastic operating system - dont get me wrong i really liked XP, but OSX just seems to be more about being creative instead of problematic, and everything is easy.
Also - you can do things like plug in midi interfaces and instruments and live instantly recognises them. I remember in windows live needed to be restarted - which is a fucker playing live gigs.
In answer to your comment. Parallels 3 is very good with the .net stuff - i run ACAD 2007 for work, as well as a lot of other things and it works flawlessly.
You still have all of the networking options and i can guarantee that anybody walking past will not be able to tell that you are not running windows as your first OS.
The real beauty is that its like having 2 computers - a mac and a pc. Parallels opens network connections so that all of your windows files are accessable by the mac os & vice versa, you can even open windows based programs like they are on the mac from the mac in coherence mode.
It is amazing.
And most music software is dual platform these days innit. All the stienberg except wavelab, all NI, Live 6 etc etc wont cost you to switch.
