Using the behringer FCB1010

Just bought and set up the FCB 1010 device.
Even for the expression pedals its worth the money. Applying midi volume commands to most patches through a pedal can bring dull lifeless sounds into contention for actual use. This works well on vocals sounds.
And I like playing some Operator/VSTi sounds with the FCB1010 bringing in other sounds on top through the midi volume command. Great stuff.
What I really want is a LIVE Template for the 1010 set up as a looper.
Will try to do this myself and send it to this list.

Can't wait for a few years time when they have 4Gig 3Ghz palm
computers then glasses + palm + Live = portable studio.
Maybe I'm missing something, or it's the difference between Live3 and 4
(I use 3) but I can't see where you're arming the tracks on that midi
layout screeny. I see the play/record button mapped.... but do you just
arm everything at the start and move down and record?

There is a new hardware loopee device - retail $390
Sounds good but is using a new type of loop setting software.
See Harmony Central for the link or go direct to

thanks for the info on the glasses. i saw video of the band "cake" on cable recently and they had a guy off the side of the stage who looked like he was wearing a heads up display.
anyway, onto your question. i leave all tracks armed, with monitor off. this way i can control a full set of 8 tracks with pedals 1-8, 9 is delete (not working reliably w/bome yet), 10 is scene down. i use a uc133 to control the track volumes and have a button for metronome on/off and scene up, among others.
the benefit against other scenarios i've attempted is that i can record clip after clip without having to switch between presets on the fcb1010. i find that it is confusing enough to attempt to remember which loop is which without also having to remember that you have to switch back down to 00 to control tracks 1-4.
i haven't been able to force ableton to record mono tracks with my desired setup yet. i'd like to use a track for monitoring purposes (but not looping), and load it with efx. the "destination" tracks will use this "monitor" track as a source and thus will record the effected signal. so far though, i cannot get these clips to be recorded in mono and i've found that i can't get ableton to be stable with 8 stereo loop tracks and the efx i like to use. it works fine with mono tracks.
so what i do is to point the destination tracks to the mono input. but that means that i need more efx, cause i wasn't able to compress/eq on the way in.
people who do this stuff end up devoting an enormous amount of time to the barest bit of minutiae

To get mono tracks....
If you goto into the Bus section (very bottom right, bus icon).
Then "unlink" the input channels.... Should give you the option of using
them separately, tho might depend on soundcard.
Also turnoff any inputs you don't use in prefs, this will free up some
resources.

musolomo may help

You guys may like to try musolomo,
it has a section for looping, called Autolooper, which has some nice features.
Like if you press the Record button AFTER you start recording, then it will add on everything back up to the beginning of the bar etc.
It is currently OS X only, windows planned.

It does a LOT more than looping though. :-)

this doesn't work for me. well, it gives me mono tracks IF the source is the sound module, but i'd like to use a "monitor" track as the source. this monitor track is mono, but the "loop" tracks end up in stereo no matter what i try.

This is when you route it in Live4?
I still have Live3..... I use a some patch leads for bounces and stuff, but
introduces latency.

yeah, this is in live 4. it might be because the efx are stereo. maybe i have to put a utility/mono at the end of the chain....
i haven't been focussing on it cause the workaround is dealable.
what i'd really like is a reliable way to delete the most recent clip, mid-record. bome almost works, but for some reason the "current" clip isn't always "current" and i sometimes end up deleting the wrong loop.

Does full / hard panning the monitor track help? Or do you still get the system load as if it was a stereo track?

PC vs MAC for Looping LIVE
Posted: Sat Apr 02, 2005 10:17 am
by Jeff Grossberg
Thank you all for your wonderful comments about this incredible topic. I am just starting to get the hardware/software together for looping adventures and would love some input on aiding my acquistions:
MAC vs PC- I was leaning towards MAC, but with most of the discussion on necessary 3rd party software, it sounds like MAC folks might be at a disadvantage (no Bome, and not sure OX software, but sounded important). Any MAC folks want to comment on making up for some of these PC oriented solutions?
FootController- FCB 1010. I have been looking at a lot of others- anyone out there care to comment on some other alternatives like Digital Music Ground Control, Rocktron MidiMate, Yamaha MF40. I had a FCB for a sec, found the manual a bit light in direction like how to assign the Tap Tempo- thoughts please?
ADVANCED LOOPING TECH: I was invisioning the ability to select a loop that one records, in my case I am doing Harmonica to Electronic music, and then effect that track on the fly with things like delay or Filter, etc. the question is: How to set up your expression pedals so you can assign them to different Effects and different tracks on the fly. So you can constantly be altering the original sound of the loops as you go. Thoughts? If you had 3-4 expression pedels that would be a bit easier, but the FCB only has one...
Thank you all again!!!!
