I'm not rich, But i make an effort to "rip off" james brown and bob marley every day. The grace, the silence between the notes, the pulse, bump and wiggle...worm holes for making you want to move. And last but not least the Simplicity of the songs....1-2 chords at the most and the energy keeps rising, rising, rising after a 10 minute jam when the Caucasian jam band counterparts get annoying after 5..........

Well, the short answer is yes, of course...but when does it cross the line, exactly? I mean, I sample a couple bars of some obscure black 70s funk guitar and combine it with beats...am I ripping some black man off, or giving props?but...influence & ripping someone off are two different things.

Well, your're certainly right from one point of view...how the hell could hip hop be anything but black music? But what I mean is that everywhere I go on this planet, I hear and see hip hop. For whatever reason, its the cultural form that ties youth together from all across the planet (along with its more manicured cousin, R+B). Its not just American whites that are claiming hip hop as far as I can see- it Europeans, North Africans, Brazillians, Chinese, and, yes, Indians. I don't mean that hip hop is the only musical form at all - just that it is the common thread popular culture has chosen. Do you think a black african has more legitimacy to claim hip hop than a white new yorker? I am not so sure...obviously it depends on exactly who we are talking about, but I hope you see my point.
