ECHOES - Pink Floyd

I didn't know songs could be 26 minutes and have whale noises before that.

Talking about Windows 95? That was done by Brian Eno. On a Mac.

"Here comes the sun" - The Beatles
First heard it when a girl sang it to me on a skiing trip. Me young enough to feel my life ahead of me.

Satisfaction - Benny Benassi. This came out at a time when I was completly bored with four on the floor. Got me into the whole electro house thing.

Rockafeller Skank - Fatboy Slim. Got me into electronic/dance music. I was completly sheltered musically growing up so this really opened my eyes.

At the risk of pissing everyone off, God Damn this is a corny thread. you people are on a Live forum and Basic Channel barely gets any mention, and almost no mention of anything Techno or Detroit at all.Don't even get me started on NIN, this guy is a real Douche. There is little that is musically sophisticated and his image is pure garbage. WTF? You guys will quote all these Wax Trax bands but almost no mention of the original artists those bands were emulating. Sorry no Offense, it's just that It is terrible how different the mainstream is as compared to the independent artists who are too busy innovating and keeping up dialogues to be one of these 'stadium bands(Fat of the land)/industry bitches (BT) If you have ever found yourself liking electronic music, please check out:

Saw Ravel and Debussy back in the day. They both gave props to Haydn & Bach, who were sitting in the celebrity section. Opening act was Vivaldi - great show. Afterwards, went to Ratner's for cheesecake.

The thread is asking for a tune that changed everything for you. Let's say I hear a cover of a cover of a cover but it still blows my mind. Afterwards, I do research and find the original. Even if I like the original better, it's still not the one "that changed everything for me." Chill out, for all we know, all the forum posters are 10 years old and have only heard Hannah Montana tracks up until recently. I think this is more about what tracks had a personal gateway effect or triggered a perspective switch within us, not so much a "this is the o.g. sound" type of thing.

I heard Debussy was on acid at that show, that's why he showed up wearing 3 powdered wigs on his ass claiming something about "formalities".

You don't have to like NIN but saying Detroit Techno had a bigger impact on Electronic music than NIN is like saying Guns n' Roses had a bigger impact on rock than the Beatles. But I realize that isn't what this thread is about. People are obviously showing their age here which isn't a bad thing.

WHATT??????? Are you saying that NIN has had any impact on electronic music? That's a joke. it must be. Techno comes from Detroit. It's an aesthetic and a style of arranging that put the power in the hands of the engineer as musician, then the artist as label owner. AS far as arrangement sytles, It's the basic principle of design used in Ableton, why do you think they call it 'Live'

I know it's asking for tunes that changed you life sxezskoz, it's a freaking shame what kids in american suburbs are exposed to.For example, the post above, which states that NIN can be looked at as 'the beatles' and Techno can be seen as 'G+R'

Thank god for the internet, ask that same question in ten years and watch the users list actual original or innovative music as their influece, but our generation grew up buying NIN/Prodigy/BT records because those are the records that made it into most stores, based on major labels' artist criteria, which has always been image obsessed/ sucked..
Furthermore, we are using Live right? I mean the program was designed fopr techno by techno, aqnd the users are not reflecting a knowledge of their own lineage or wares.

I sympathize with you to a certain extent, morerecords, but it's really not in the spirit of the thread to have an elitist name drop battle.

that belongs in the "what are your influences" thread.

people can't help the shit they heard that turned them on, but they are responsible for what they found out about after they got turned on...

anyway, carry on.

PS "set it off" is by Strafe, if i remember correctly.
And dead can dance fucking sucks unless you're 16 years old.

EDIT, not talking about the NIN -detroit argument just so you know.

I'm 100% with you on this. And i think it's just the fact that most people don't really care that much. I busted my ass as a kid trolling through record stores and picking the brains of people to find the real shit. And yeah, there's really no excuse now that we've entered the internet age. But guess what? I still think the majority of people don't really give a shit about music. The same tired shit that is a warmed over presentation of somebody else's innovation will be touted as the greatest shit and sell the most records. That's how it works, the cheap imitation acts have better haircuts, clothes and marketing, and are less frightening to the fucking idiot masses so they sell more and get the recognition.

a little note here:

I remember seeing mbm open for the prodigy. most of the cats didn't know who the fuck they were. I was just wondering how the fuck MBM, who prodigy sampled the shit out of, were the opening act.... I left about 15 mins into prodigy....

Well I'm not being elitist I swear, just very very frustrated. there's no name dropping, I took the time to think of bands worth investigating, becuase I wanted to share, and now these people can go research, and deicde IF I wias fiull of shit or not, but now with a broader pallette/.

bocephalus bouncing ball by aphex twin was pretty key in the different-kind-of way-to-do-music sort of way. also in that way, i have to say all tracks from orb's orblivion (it's kindof one long track in my memory from those late nights )
