My mother was like...fuckin' psycho or something.
When I was a kid she used to take me to these triple feature flicks, and I will NEVER EVER EVER forget being age 6 and seeing....
1. The Mutilator
2. Nightmare On Elm Street
3. Reanimator.
All in the same night.
I don't care what movie you guys list...nothing is as fucked up as taking a child to see a movie where a crazed doctor inserts some green liquid into dead patients to make them come back alive. The thought of watching a decapitated body caryy around its own talking head....and then Freddy walking down that dark alley with elongated arms......
I dare you to find Reanimator and tell me that wasn't a good movie....they sure don't make them like they used to.
And for the record, if you've never seen a zombie flick called "Dead Alive" then you've missed THEEEEEEEEE BEST zombie movie ever created. The first 30 minutes are pretty stupid..but once the priest starts kicking zombie ass.....
Just find 'Dead Alive"...and thank me later.

Whatever Doesn't Kill You, Only Makes You Stranger.
Can't believe nobody has said this...but The Exorcist totally freaked me out and still does today...I won't watch it if its on.
Other than that, the oritinal old school movies that scarred the crap out of me include the original Halloween, original Nightmare on Elm Street, and original Friday the 13th

So many folks I know thought these films were very boring. But they're two of my absolute 'horror' faves.nebulae wrote:documentary style thrillers work best to creep me out:

Open Water
Is it just me or don't most folks think whilst watching stuff like this "shit, what if that was me and my girlfriend/friend/family member...how would I react?" - and isn't the contemplation of that the scariest thing ?
Films like these manage this admittedly rare feat, but you need to want to be scared too.
Open Water (was really amazing. Am totally scared of swiming in "open water" ´till today.)
The Grudge 1
The Creep (hasn´t been mentioned yet i think)
The Ring 1

I think the horror movies of the future are going to be like the Saw series except more realistic and less violent. People will be crammed into a room where they will be forced to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger. And they won't even provide alcohol! The audience will have to sit through every excruciatingly awkward moment. I'm already cringing at the possible scenes.
yeah I've always kind of equated it to how vivid your imagination isevernaut wrote:Tone Deft wrote:Wolf Creek was too slow to get going, it built tension though. interesting that so many people like it, I guess I have a short attention span.
Blair Witch-...........
I think context and the amount you're willing to scare yourself is key with both the above movies.
.
the thing with blair withch was it was disturbing but completely played on not knowing anything - it left it completely up to you
just trying to imagine what could possiibly derange someone so much that all they could do was stand in the corner - and what was behind them?
I kind of felt people who go on about how lame blair witch was are probably just not very imaginitive
I enjoyed Blaire Witch myself but I think the problem, as with most things, was the hype that surrounded it shortly after it was released in all the major theaters. I've never experienced, seen, or heard anything that lived up to the praise of the entire globe.
I saw it before it was released to the masses so at the time I thought it was great too. I have a friend in Hollywood who lived across the street from the main chick in the movie when it was only out a couple weeks and everybody thought it was real and she was dead. My friend saying hello to her in the morning on his way to work kind of ruined that mystery for me.

Blair Witch was great IMO. I saw that 2 days before going backpacking in the wilderness, not THAT will fuck you up let me tell you. It just got over hyped and too much media.
