That's a limitation of the Virus, not Live, Ableton has nothing to do with that. There's no way to force a hardware synth to play in 'faster than realtime'.
Nice!! These days I use a lot of hardware synths + fx, does get tiring having seperate MIDI and audio for each instrument... this sounds like a very neat solution.Poster wrote:yep..Doc Jones wrote:wow. this release just keeps getting better and better.
another one;
what I used to do, previous to 7;
have a 1 bar MIDI loop,
loop it, say 4 times,
tweak the hardware while recording on a 2nd track, so the recording has loads of variation..
now..
the external instrument device 'realtime freezes' the exact length of the MIDI clip..
so you can't do a 4 bar recording from a 1 bar MIDI clip..
you could duplicate the notes and make the clip 4 bars long..
but you can also keep the 1 bar length and unlink the clip envelope to the length you want the realtime freeze to be..
I think you misread my post...Tarekith wrote:That's a limitation of the Virus, not Live, Ableton has nothing to do with that. There's no way to force a hardware synth to play in 'faster than realtime'.

Rad. I saw the screenshots, and am looking forward to playing around with this.Tarekith wrote:Sorry Sqook, yes that's possible now with the new External plug.

the external instrument can also be used with multitimbral plugins like Kontakt..sqook wrote:
But will it also work for software instruments (ie, Virus Control)? Or does one need to insert a "fake" hardware effect in the chain to get the freeze to go in realtime?
Why is there a difference in sound when it comes to softsynths and plugs? Shouldn't they calculate the same output using either method?sqook wrote:Offline = Host renders everything as fast as possibleTimur wrote:What is the difference between "offline" freezing/rendering and "realtime"?
Realtime = Host renders everything at the same rate as you would hear it
Yes, they should... but most plugins can be rendered in realtime. The virus plugin can't... it's a special plug which acts like an ordinary instrument, but is not responsible for any synthesis. All that work is done on the virus hardware and transported to the plugin via USB, which is why this plugin must be frozen and rendered in realtime.Timur wrote:Why is there a difference in sound when it comes to softsynths and plugs? for clarity's sake to the guy asking the question... you probably mean most plugins can be rendered in off line. The virus plugin can't...Yes, they should... but most plugins can be rendered in realtime. The virus plugin can't... .
