how does live 3 or 4 work on a g5?

im an old mac head thats been on a PC for the last 2 years of the os9/x debacle, but looking to get back on board.

Ryan - for cheap mobility but high quality, the Echo Indigo PCMCIA card rcoks! Ranges from $129 - $179 and there are three to choose from. It supports 24 bit/96khz. As far as I know the Mbox is fine, but I just prefer to stay away from USB audio as you'll never get lower than 11ms latency.

As for a laptop, I'm using a Dell Latitude C840 w/1GB Ram. It's a P4/1.8Ghz (faster ones are available now) but most importantly it includes all the proper chipsets for a rock solid audio machine! Models like mine are going on ebay for under $1,000. If you want the newer model it's Latitude D800.

yea i like the echo cards-- hooked my friend up with one.. but i was thinking the mbox bc i need to be able to run pro tools... so even if im not playing a gig or recording something i can have the mbox hooked up so that i can mix and work on things in pro tools-- i have looked into dell.. but when you start getting into the 2 gig ram, p4, 3.x ghz processor w/ x frontside bus etc they become hella expensive.. this laptop will primarily be used for mixing and composition and recording.. with less live use -- i figured that if i got the mbox i would be able to use it for dj style sets just as i would the echo indigo dj card

are there any machines that i missed in the $2,500 range w/ 2 gig ram 3.2 ghz 7200 rpm drive etc?

i love my powerbook. i pretty much just use live, i record direct into the built in soundcard and i never have any probs getting the results i want. just use what works for you.

I've got my firewire 410 latency down to 64 samples - as low as it will go - on my pismo powerbook - the FW410 is wicked

dual channel memory will give a roughly 10% performance boost overall... so if you can get it in your system, it is almost certainly cheaper and more effective at making your apps run faster and more efficiently than a cpu upgrade...

Gaspode, nice to hear that my machine gets that kind of increase with the dual channel. But I have a question, is it something fairly rare in a laptop? To have dual channel RAM. I am psyched because my old laptop had 256 Mbs of RAM (still ran LIVE pretty well on Win2000).

Now, I have 1024 Mbs of PC3200, DDR400MHz dual channel, and when loading clips into RAM it barely touches it. Yeah!
