The Rawandan genocide was inspired on the local radio. Violent messages resulted in violent acts. Maybe this bill is imperfect, but I strongly believe that when used to promote violence, freedom of speach needs to be limited.
Wackos and religious fanatics who incite others to kill on their behalf need to be eliminated from society. If that means imprisonment, deportment or whatever, I'm for it (short of capital punishment).

I agree that the social contract does require the individual to sacrifice some freedoms for the joys of citizenship, and I agree that media does play a significant role in manufacturing consent. However, The Rwandan genocide was inspired long before the radio and was intensified by European colonial forces, such as the forces CURRENTLY IN THE MIDDLE EAST.
Now how is that for radicalization?

Bush told his troops to "take a trip to Iraq and
see what all the fuss was about - but *no*
killing!"
And in Afghanistan, too. "No casualties, troops!
Fix them some milk and cookies, and tell them
to be nice. Get in, get out, and make me proud!"

Where are all of these home-grown terrorist acts?
As far as I'm concerned we have that situation under control.
Unibomber? Timothy McVeigh? Homegrown 'terrorists' have acted basically alone or aided by just one or two accessories.
The first WTC, 9/11, and the Pentagon? All foreign conceived acts.
We're doing just fine within the borders. Labeling domestic groups terrorists, who haven't even successfully performed a 'terrorist' act, is idiocy especially when the Unibombers and McVeighs would still be freely conspiring within their own minds.
We are clearly no longer in control.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rwanda#Colonial_EraThe Belgian colonizers also accepted the prevailing class rule already in place, i.e., the minority Tutsi upper class and the lower classes of Hutus and Tutsi commoners. However, in 1926 the Belgians abolished the local posts of "land-chief", "cattle-chief" and "military chief," and in doing so they stripped the Hutu of their limited local power over land. In the 1920s, under military threat, the Belgians finally helped to bring the northwest Hutu kingdoms, who had maintained local control of land not subject to the Mwami, under the Tutsi royalty's central control.[7] These two actions disenfranchised the Hutu. Large, centralized land holdings were then divided into smaller chiefdoms.[8]
yeah, let's blame the radio for radicalization!

...Next time do your own googling...
...And next time don't be so fast to blame colonialism. That's the easiet cop-out for bad behaviour. "I did evil shit because whitey made me do it 50 years ago". I call bullshit. Lots of former colonies worldwide haven't played host to genocide.
I probably know more about Rawanda than most others here on these forums... though I never went, a few of my friends served with Gen Dallaire.
It's clear to me; The wide dissemination of radicalism fired up people and exasperated existing tribal / ethnic hatred. All societies need to establish reasonable limits on freedom of speech, though this is an extreme example of what can happen when speech runs amok.

Suit #1: I mean, have you got any insight as to why a bright boy like this would jeopardize the lives of millions?
Suit #2: No, sir, he says he does this sort of thing for fun.

Arguing blame was not my intention. The point I was trying to make was that radicalization has been a long historic process. Sure we can blame newspapers for publishing pro- Viet Cong propaganda and just ignore the French, Chinese, Japanese, and American occupations of Vietnam to try to understand radicalization.M. Maybe this commission would be good after all. Western thinkers need to wake up and smell the Java from the violent third world they once occupied.
