That's the problem, it's become the norm to play with a laptop and do shit all. I feel sorry for this guy that he can't even figure out the absolute basics - some filtering and a bit of beat repeat. Man that must feel awkward on stage, pretending to turn knobs while a CD is playing, yikes...lola wrote:It's so strange in these electronic live scene community these days, spotting who is touching knobs and faders and who is not.
For me there is nothing live going on anyway other than it looks like someone is checking his or her email on their laptop on stage.
Why make such a fuzz about this.... its like convicting someone of not showing vu meters..come on... No offense but how live is your(topicstarter) performance anyway?
If COSM didn't have professional responsibilities then I definitely think the video should be posted. But then there's also moral obligation - people shouldn't pay money for a "live" act that literally presses play on a CD....

Ohhh, this sounds good.COSM wrote:Just out of interest, could anyone who has any other evidence of someone doing a digital millie vanilli, or has an interest in contributing a small amount of time to a project which should help educate people better on the issue of fake live performance, please contact me and let me know either via PM or tom at cosm dot co.nz . I am conspiring something, and I think It's going to work.

Who cares? Most people these days just go to concerts to do drugs and be seen anyways.Afro88 wrote:If COSM didn't have professional responsibilities then I definitely think the video should be posted. Suit #1: I mean, have you got any insight as to why a bright boy like this would jeopardize the lives of millions?
Suit #2: No, sir, he says he does this sort of thing for fun.

I don't think fakes are something particular to electronic music - however the computer does obviously aid those inclined toward laziness and if you stated to the majority of the general public that something was too complex to perform live they'd likely accept it. Now as a comparison to boring 'tech', and boring techies, with laptops check this from 50 years ago:Afro88 wrote:That's the problem, it's become the norm to play with a laptop and do shit all.

Now whether or not one accepts the musical premise, alongside the fact that he does use a backing track on a reel to reel lol, it so outstrips in terms of a physical performance, including the fact that he has to 'reframe' the instrumentation on the fly via a stopwatch, that your average laptopian might as well just stay indoors until they even figure out what 'performance' actually means...
Would that awkwardness be the wad of notes in their pocket that they've just ripped off the audience?I feel sorry for this guy that he can't even figure out the absolute basics - some filtering and a bit of beat repeat. No i didn't but, again, why make sucha big fuzz out of pushing a play button or not showing vu's.
And asking to put a video file online or not, and telling people that its a wellknown big act who did this. sorry again not trying to offend someone, but its so ..........................(use this space to fill in)
Does having a good night depend performance or sound?
Not showing a v.u does that make u dance less?
Personally i think the topic starter should not put this file online, its not that important, other than put yourself in a discusable position.

Never saw a rockband live no, cuz i don't like rock most of the time, but saw bootsy, fred wesley, randy crawford, erica baduh, the roots etc
Hiphop concerts en dmc contests since 1986, but what is your question?

Watch his videos, then come back to us with an informed opinion.lola wrote:No offense but how live is your(topicstarter) performance anyway?

But from the sounds of your previous posts, I doubt that's going to happen.
We've got a flamer on our hands!!
Guitar | Synths | Samplers | Ableton @ Phantogram & Big Grams
so what if at the dmcs they were just playing a tape and not really doing anything at all? youd be happy either way right?lola wrote:lola wrote:

Read my posts again, i am just asking why its so important to ask people to put a video online of someone who played live or not.
To my playing with a laptop and pushing buttons is like pushing the playknob of an old reel,so i could not quit understand why the topicposter asked these questions for putting a video online of an act that is in the same bizz (is that the point where you judge me as a flamer?)
I don't get it, its just my opinion.
,
Thats a totally different thing, maybe its my ignorance that a laptop isn't a live thing.ThrowAway wrote:lola wrote:so what if at the dmcs they were just playing a tape and not really doing anything at all? youd be happy either way right?lola wrote:

You can show me that it isn't and broaden my mind on that subject.
If a turntableist would program his scratches and tricks on a sl1200, and put it on stage it would be the same.

Whether Tom should put up his video or not, it's up to him.
I think it's worth pointing out that people who have music careers are people who make good music, and put on good shows. How big of an ass kiss worry wart you are in the eyes of the other people in your scene shouldn't mean jack shit. I'm sorry but who gives a fuck about that shit.
If your main concern is kissing ass in a scene why bother? Life is too short for that sort of unpleasantness.
