Get a machine drum and a fuzz pedal to hook it up to and one of those kaos pads.

I think that a laptop, decent audio interface like motu traveller, ableton live and get yourself a copy of FXpansion's BFD 2 (excellent drum software). BFD will sound just like a real drummer without much work involved.

BFD is sick. Not sure if he'll be back or not though.
He did say they have a live drummer which they have no intention of replacing.

Then you should try FXpansions Guru. It's one powerful software drum machine. Comes with a good library and lets you import files which can be sliced and rearranged in no time at all using the built in step sequencer.

I don't see any sw which could be better for a live situation...
you can always go the hw (akai MPC/roland MV8800) route...
but if it's software you're after ....go with god..err I mean live...
