I listen to stuff like the roots, aesop rock, cannibal ox, blueprint, illogic .... th list goes on & on.
Some of the lyrics & beats & the combination of are sublime ... aesop rocks ' I got smoke in my iris, but I painted a sunny day on the inside of my eyelids' & shit loads more that are ... art (I kinda like the funny, witty stuff as well.... blueprints full of that, for instance that 'jeery springer episode' tune).
Then I listen to stuff like Lil' Wayne & I just scratch my head.

I don't get it..... poles apart.

But it's lil' Wayne et al. who get the mad props & the cash.... strange world we're living in.

thing is with older rap is that you can nod your head to the drum line then tune into the lyrics and it's the more or less the same flow. seems to me new stuff is much looser with the lyrical beat, which is what drives me nuts. that's why I don't like Eminem for the most part, it's like he's not even listening to the drums.

does that make any sense?

For some "cutting edge" - ahead of the curve - forward thinking - digital musicians some of y'allz iz still living in the past, which is not for me to judge, but damn, 1990 is over.

your point of view doesn't count on this one adonis cause we all know that you know what you're listening to but there are people out there listening to the same stuff that don't know what they're listing to.

I don't think its an issue of living in the past.

I don't see why as music "progresses" the quality should decrease.

Aside from that, its not like Wayne is doing anything progressive or cutting edge. I don't know much about him but from what I've seen and heard it seems like he's just another sub-par rapper that the industry packaged and processed to get money from kids, sell products, and glamorize materialism. That's an old formula that has been done to death already. I don't see that as being cutting edge, ahead of the curve, or forward thinking.

Its not the issue about being a positive uplifting figure for social change either. I don't think Wayne is particularly positive but I do notice in some of his songs he addresses political issues and socio-economic imbalances in society. That's also something that has been done to death in pop music and in underground music too.

That's just my opinion. Maybe I've completely missed the point or some sort of revolutionary underlying message(s) in the past couple of mixtapes and albums that I've downloaded (because I would never buy a Lil Wayne album) of his.

When I think about hip-hop that's progressive and cutting edge I think of MadLib's Quasimoto albums, El-P's stuff, Cage's last album, Subtitle, Buck 65, Subtle, etc.

no man, I do buy contemporary rap CDs, I just can't get into the style where the beat has NOTHING to do with the vocal flow. there's no rhyme or reason why you can't take the backing from one track and exchange it with another. IMO.


cmreal - you're taking quite a beating over this and staying pretty chill, props. I only did some youtube searches, is there a song that you'd put out there as "c'mon, how can you NOT like this on?" long thread to read back for a reference, TIA!

there's no arguing musical taste, hopefully that's common knowledge.

why should music be new ?..

if you listen to the stuff that is released in the past you will need a lotta lives to discover. stuff that you never heard.... old but for you still new stuff..... why should it be 2008????

In my opinion, the lyrics, the beats, and the relevance of the content in the lyrics is way more on point than it ever was - but that's my one opinion on this board.

Just waiting on "King Mathers".....

Whether you appreciate this Wayne dude or not, his record label and management are going to be happy at the debate this has provoked, already 4 pages and close to 60 responses, no such thing as bad press for a musician/artist/rapper.

They'll be hoping a few more haters and a defenders get in on this slanging match to keep the interest alive and real ...
