if you're going to be off the network, why would you want all these updates that are 99% geared towards web security?

That's probably because your graphics driver is not open source, was it Nvidia? I think you get less problems using new ATI cards, definitely if Intel as the drivers are open. It's very frustrating, update Ubuntu, break the graphics drivers. They do seem to have cracked that with Hardy Heron though, have you tried it yet? Ubuntu's just getting better with every release.
@Mesmer

Yes, probably should get one of those. I'm at work now, just had somebody (a fairly fierce sales lady) come up to me and ask me for help with a new computer she's about to buy as she's a complete beginner, aparently it's one of those fantastic new mac things! Oh, the irony. I told her I know nothing about them and won't be able to help. It probably is the best choice for her though and I expect she'll love it.

The reboot was always unnecessary but I suppose it was the easiest way... And anyways, I think it's fixed. They're working a lot on these things.

Yep, now hard working on mac version of my software : )
After lot of test, windows embedded not work stable.
I continue supporting monotouchlive software for windows users just for limited time, now i work on mac version.
When i start monotouchlive project, i already are mac user but not 100% convinced of leave windows.
That change now.
OSX is the best OS for me, for desktop, for DAW for anything, and is stable and secure under any situation.
Second Place Ubuntu, but not really util for DAW, not for now, and i hoppe that change some day, for that reason i open this post.
WINDOWS, nevermore..........and i really convinced is really bad product and the best os from MS
Best regards.
EDIT: great news for xp lovers:

Let's say Live does get ported to Linux. What about all my plugins?

Then you start petitioning your plug-in developers... They're not going to port before there's a host, are they?

After 6 months I bet there would be some sort of "soundflower" or "midi-ox" type thing, sitting in between you Linux host and a wine vst-host module; these would provide you with virtual midi and/or audio ports to get the signals in and out of your treasured plugins.
isn't vapourware the most amazing release yet?

forget your plugins,
they're already dead.

I would go for Linux but no frigging drivers for the RME Fireface and no plans to support it either
I don't think VST plugins would be a significant problem - I think it would just require the VST host (i.e. Live) being able to translate any Windows specific information sent between them - I could well be talking out of my arse though.
Mind you some of the plugins do store information in the registry so you'd probably need Wine or something like that to pretend to be a windows registry unless the VST vendor changed the plugin model

Well there once was a time when it was either Atari (cheap) or Mac (expensive) to make music, Windows was a joke.
There was a time when Netscape was the king of browsers
There was a time when there was no Ableton Live.
Linux might be rising. It's still not as easy to use as Windows, it's already faster/prettier/more stable. More importantly, Acer, 2nd largest notebook manufacturer in the world after HP and Asus are starting to offer Linux on their products!
If you can't get XP to run stable you're doing something wrong though. ALL computers are a pain in the ass there are no plug & play solutions, it takes time determination and a lot of tweaking to get it good.
Would I change to Linux? Hell yeah!

this was gibbon I'm pretty sure.

I prefer dates and funny names to arbitrary numbers, I must say.
If there ever was such a thing as a dork alarm, I think it exploded when Ableton put up 5.2.7b12, or whatever.

Dj-Grobe wrote:Yea windows used by millions......... you think that make better?........the answer should be yes........with OS TESTED BY MILLIONS arround the world, shoud be the more stable OS, but that not true........why? just because windows its really bad product. Work but is bad.
This are my major troubles:
XP CRASH ANY RANDOM TIMES (ON LIVE GIGs) OR:
ITS ABSOLUTLY NORMAL HAVE AUDIO GLITCHES ALL TIME,
I BUYED HIGH NUMBER OF POPULAR SOUND CARDS MODELLS AND TESTED....... ALLWAYS THE SAME
Just that, 2 very important thing to me, specially when i have gigs all fridays and saturdays all weeks of my life........
Sorry but XP not stable, and i see the same with all users use XP..........NEVER HAVE THAT TROUBLES WITH OSX.
Why I JUST not use OSX well i use but have my hands chains to expensive apple hardware.
Widows is used by millions, but millions no need and not use realtime audio aplications and milliones not have 2 or 3 gigs per week.
I not want sound arrogant please uderstand.
Check the setup of all pro djs/musician/producers.............you see everybody use apple with osx......and please dont think is a geek thing.......its real OSX IS BETTER OS for critical enviroment like in same way linux is.
im happy with OSX BUT LINUX CAN BE REAL ALTERNATIVE, FREE AND STABLE !!
WHY NOT?
Vista really sucks, im tired of make lot of test always same result, vista not ok for pro adio appz. specially when make rookie usage of the audio appz, vista start act very bad.
I love Apple OSX but not really love the hardware apple sell, i think the market have great and cheap alternatives from dell or other vendors.......in lot of sitations more powerfull at half of price.
I repeat i think at this time LINUX DISTROS LIKE debian or Ubuntu are mature for companys like ableton.
is another alternative why not? everybody read this post just forgot my troubles, with windows and focus your minds in this points: inux is free, linux is secure, linux no virus spyware, is mature product, and really more stable OS compared with windows.........i ask again..........why not?
ok. i support the live under linux idea, but really.
what the fuck have you done to your computer?
my xp is rock stable. infact its so stable ims tarting to think theres something wrong with it.
perhaps you need to learn a thing or two about your os, and tweak it a bit.
also, about crashing live gigs: are you using thirdparty software? these have a tendency to be unstable. when playing live make sure to use native devices as much as possible. if you can build your FSU plugin with native devices instead: do it. also saves cpu.
but yeah most importantly, take some time with your os, read up on it and tweak it a bit, or go get a sliptreamed one. xp is as stable as you make it.
if you dont take care of your computer, your computer will not take care of you.
