There's not too much back and forth with Live and the MPC1000 for me. I either do some sampling and loop-making in the MPC and record them into live for easier arranging and more FX, or I load up whatever drums or melodic samples I need and play the MPC like an instrument into whatever track I'm working on.
Can the MPC1000 sync to Live via USB? Or do you have to use MIDI channels?

i asume if you run your drumpatterns to two different tracks in live and then assign the crossfader in live to a fader on the mpd (i don't have one, but assime its possible as i do this with my uc-33e) then you perfectly can crossfade between your drumtracks just like you're mixing vinyls...i know but I really want a crossfader on my drumpad for beat juggling and such, actualy i'd like it to have a touch pad too like the padkontrol

i also use an mpc... within some weeks i have to perform live.
as for now i also use the mpc for the pads...
(i used to use the mpc for entire songs)
so in a way its a way too big midi controller, therefor i'm really concidering
purchasing the mpd32, looked up some reviews, and as a mpc user i love the pads, they seem to be the same on the mpd...
i will not sell the mpc, as i like it too much, but for combining with live, i'm not convinced yet.
i guess my search process for the ideal setup playing gigs is not over yet...
it would be a shame not using the mpc anymore, but sounds are more adjustable in a DAW, then in the mpc itself...on the other hand, beats made in the mpc (loaded from zip), just sound better in my opinion...
grrrr...

MPD32 is also way too big in my opinion. It didn't need to be that big. Manufacturers should realize that continuing to cater to the "bigger must be better" attitude is going to hurt them. Korg's nanocontrollers as well as faderfox and Nocturn have the right idea.dj mush wrote:as for now i also use the mpc for the pads...

I too have gone to Live from the MPC. I feel like my old MPC beats, even w/o beats "hit harder" but I love the flexibility and portability of Live on my laptop.
FWIW: I just bought an MPD32 to have a smaller controller. I am happy w/ my purchase.

Here is what I am doing for this:
Forst, I record EVERYTHING in live.
Secund, I record it all into ABLETON. Then I take an MPC and sample those. The MPC kind of sits on the side so I can use it when I have to record. I press stop a lot, wait and then and transfer the files from the SDcard to RAM. You have to do this fast or your ideas will go away and make tracks without you.
Next, I recording everything on the MPC that I just did in the previous steps above.
Then I go only digital and keep it that way for the rest of the session. I compress then press stop again. Next I use the insert effects like compressor and arpeggiation and mix them like a hip-hop star.
Here's the secret of my sound: MPC. I use the MPC for most of the files and then create the musics on those. I use the big ones and the small ones for lighter beats.

EvilEvil,
it sounds like something interesting, but i can't really follow your explanation, some way i get lost in it...
could you be a little bit more clear?
thank you!

had a start of a song. drums, bass, weird sounds, nothing happening with it.
I froze the drums, used Switch (free for PC, lots of formats like 44.1k 16bit)
http://www.download.com/Switch/3000-214 ... d=10831233
to change it to the right rate and put it onto the mpc. (actually did 2Gb worth at once, Switch is great for batch processing, and MPCs need 44.1k 16bit.) Live's Freeze directory puts out 32 bit floating, MPCs don't like that.
do the whole chop shop thing with the MPC, make a nice bank of Track Mutes.
sync the MPC to Live, give it it's own audio input track.
put the MPC audio in track on Fader A, the other drums in Live on Fader B
with midi assign Live's X-fader to Q-Link 2 on the mpc.
MPC - enable midi out for the Progam for the chopped drums, assign Pad Bank D to the clips in Live. for each Group of sounds (drums, bass, weird shit...) make a scene that turns them off but leave the others on (stop clip button in ones you want to control).
the clips in Live are also put into a little Follow Mode group so I can hit a pad on the MPC Pad Bank D and put the stuff in Live into automatic follow mode and just play on the MPC.
*edit* I left off that the program used for the Live control has to be different than the program playing material on the MPC, otherwise as you're launching Live clips you're interrupting the MPC playing it's stuff.
I have such a hard on right now I'm about to pass out.
btw is (mostly) all stuff you could do with an mpd32 and Live 7.
It would be awesome if you could put up a quick demo of it on youtube !

or i could do a File Share and upload the mpc files in a .zip, camera's busted.
IIRC bounce your tracks to the MPC (or freeze them to make .wav files which you can convert to a format the MPC likes.)
then make a program on the MPC of your set sliced up
then make a MIDI program on the MPC and map it back to the set in Live.
two devices, 1 set of audio data.

Re: Live and MPC - what's your flow?
I just got my first MPC today. Got an old 2000XL. I'm just trying it out really. Got a good price so if I dont like it I'll just sell it on.
The plan is to see if it has the power to inspire, and to be something fun to mess with, without having to stare at a screen or USE A MOUSE! (I am growing VERY tired of mousing)
I also figured if I'm going to spend as much money as I do on old records, I might as well put an MPC between my turn-table and Live.
First impression was that it looks like a cash register, is built like a tank, and resonates badly into whatever surface it is placed on (just like the MPD/MPK)
The pads look and feel similar to the MPD32, but they are far more responsive. I dont have to break my fingers off this thing. I couldn't recommend the MPD32 to anyone who wants to do nuancy drum stuff.
I didn't get along very well with my MPD32 at all to be honest. My favourite drum pads that I've tried were on a PadKontrol I tried. Ima probably buy a PK at some stage.
The pads on my old Fantom were decent too.
Personally, I feel the company order of drum pad quality goes something like this:
Korg>Roland>AKAI>M-Audio>Novation
Anyway, Theres a lot of learning in this thing, so I'm off to do some RTFM'ing.
I don't think there is much argument in favour of using an MPC instead of Live for power or convenience, but perhaps its dedicated controls and inspirational "instrument" feel are reason enough to have one for some people. Ima find out in the coming days and weeks.
