Stuff in Live you wish you figured out a long time ago

Here's one i discovered this week.

On the clip view for an audio file, above the edit and save buttons there's the file name.
If you click it, the browser opens up, in the location of that file.
Quite handy sometimes.

=move track left / right in session view.

Use Cmd+Up/Down in Arrangement View.

PC users use Ctrl for Cmd

Edit: Works with multi-selected tracks too

i often resample stuff and have a hard-ish time finding the numbered file of the resample
this takes me straight to the resampled audio, click... show in explorer and i can then drag that file into soundforge for chopping up and re-editing

i just realised if i connect soundforge to ableton the the preferences section the audio file will open in soundforge when i click edit DOH!!! haha

The Little Blue Hand (i.e. locking a controller to a device)

I use a Trigger Finger and an M-Audio Keyboard. Clicking on the device, and seeing the Little Blue Hand, means that you can control the device with the Trigger Finger while still playing any other instrument on the keyboard, for example. Recent (simple) discovery. So, tweak the delay on your drums while playing a sick bass line, without having to program anything at all, then switch devices ad infinitum.

Ctrl+u quantizes to grid. Transformation from straight to swing is now slightly easier. I still dearly miss the quantize pop-up and global swing though

The quantize pop-up is still there. Open it with Ctrl+Shift+U.

Command-click (I guess Ctrl-click on PC) in the upper part of the scrub area moves the Loop Brace right to where you click.

Speaking of Slice...I may be the last one to figure this out, but I just learned how to use that kinda like Groove Template. I still am using Live 7 and I'm not a drummer and not that great at programming MIDI drum clips that I like the feel of (excellent grammar, eh?). So...


I found a loop I like the feel of (played by a live drummer) and sliced it to MIDI using the Transients setting. Then, with Quantize off, I copied the MIDI notes that were created and pasted them into a new MIDI track. Voila! Real drummer timing. Then, I adjusted the volumes of each hit first by looking at the original audio file (to get in the right neighborhood) then by listening and "mixing" the MIDI velocities. It worked pretty well.

Now I can match the original groove and add percussion, or create a new drum kit while retaining the groove, or--I suppose--could add a synth line that matched exactly, etc.

You can simply drop your audio drums file on the groove pool, then apply the groove that was extracted to the other clips in Live, audio and midi.
