if you want to escape the system, maybe you should look into some of these principalities that exist:

@Angstrom - that's full on man! Respect worthy, but full on.....

Reminds me of the Burning man festival ethos, nothing is sold there, everything is traded or gifted.
Some links for you to look at:

first half of the film talks about the issues with the monetary system, second part talks about the Venus Project, which is a resource based system as an alternative to the monetary system.

Even if you could get enough people to shift their thinking... eventually corruption will rear its head.. I want more tomatoes than him or why has she got the most vacuums - that kind of thing.
I like your idea (a lot) but I think that you are far to trusting and possibly forgetting the evil that men do...
shit just look east.
Greed is irrelevant IMO in that it is personal. The potential in Barter is that the concept of 'value' can go different places. The idea of a market value for an item is far more liquid when trading on the basis of need. One man junk is another mans treasure.
the glass is half full?
I like that stance.
what you say is true, but what Angstrom said is true too. political retribution is an ugly thing, but there's power in numbers. hats of to the concept of real free trade!

So..
In a barter type situation, what happens to the people that develop some kind of long term illness, get old, or become immobile or disabled in some way?

well it could be like what they do in japan already. You volunteer hours when your young to working with the elderly and they keep track for you so that when your older your entitled to how ever many hours you gave. It encourages to stay healthy and everyone wins in theory.
One thing I do know is nursing homes are not where I want my family, and your job's not waiting around. Our labor system is not up to my standards here.

yay, friends corner! I think your tracks are definitely good enough quality to make money from, but just say no! Instead, barter your tracks for other goods & services...

there is still room for insurance pools. but basically I trust people will help each other more, because of the personal relation they establish.
also, this virtual currency doesnt lose its value. so it is much more reliable as an insurance.

He will trade them for other goods.
(sorry, couldn't resist to make this lame joke. Anyway, Grappa is totally right to think about this stuff. 20 years ago stuff like craigslist, ebay or wikipedia were full blown utopia. I mean, today you can swap houses with people from all over the world with no middlemen or costs involved. Why shouldn't you be able to swap other goods.)

Of course, there is a dark, sinister side to this barter system...

i don't even disagree, but it's in human nature (actually because we are not that far from animals) that it does not work for very long... some lion will show up on the way... welcome to the jungle.*
