the iMac seems amazing, I really want one too.
And I don't think the price is that high, when you concider the screen and its resolution that comes with it.
Now, I got also a desktop PC that is in a shuttle case...
It's fucking hot, it makes noise, windows 7 is not that amazing, the os look cheeeaaaappp compare to leopard.
Also, for me, two things invaluable for mac os : no viruses, and TIME MACHINE.
Time machine is amazing, you can grab something back easily, if your HD crashed, or if you saved and make a mistake, etc.... time machine is a total insurance and peace of mind.

hehe troll and a half ..
i've built about 30 high end PC's in my time from windows in the 486 days right up to quadcore win vista machnes you know what ? OS X still shits on windows and i would rather use my mac anyday to write music than my 2 windows boxes. Although they make great gaming computers .. my imac is pretty comparable in the price/spec ratio to a comparable dell or compaq or HP or anyother 'brand name' computer
and the quote about using computers instead of managing computers is spot on
new 27 - 21.5 " i- macs are great computers for audio if you don't need pci or express card expanion they are a great performer with i7 quad core led LCD and are virtually silent built in firewire 800

I'll just fix that for you.
Windows will continue to run on Apple, HP, Sony, Dell, etc, etc and they sure seem committed to taking that even further. I don't see Apple allowing their OS to run on any other hardware at all...

ive been thinking of maybee getting a used i mac sometime and giving logic a go.
since i got more into live im struggling to break out of session view, the more i use live, the more im seeing it as a instrument and sketch pad, im thinking using somethig else (logic) to lay things out and arange might be the way to go.
is anyone else doing something similar?

so after all the years you still didn't advance further than believing the myths that existed in pre-3rd-millenium days? impressive..
not.

i dont need 4 core, thanks
btw
if i do myself anything on mbp for example change ram, sdd etc then im gonna loose the warranty. even if its extended
huh?
When they released the unibodies they made the hard drive and ram more accessible to change yourself and it doesn't void the warranty. Just switched my drive the other day and it took me about 3 minutes.
The previous MBP involved about 12 steps and 36 screws to change the drive and that voided the warranty. Was quite a rush to pull off though.
are there 3rd party ssd drives for apple mbp mount? what they are like compared to "originals" (speed, weight etc)

well, all of the stuff you stated

none of those is particularly true. and none was, since at least that millenium. but i don't care, believe the hype.

yes...
but somehow i like arranging in protools more than in logic... but protools lacks a propper midi implementation..like live... so logic is probably the better choice to acompanie live.. especially seeing the very good price.. a very good set of plugs comes with it and you can do soundtracks for movies with it..
something you dont try with a program that cant lock events to the time code

yes you do
live flies like an eagle on 4 cores.
i have a dual core 2.4ghz macbook pro
and live is ok on it. good enough for light gigging.
on the 2.8ghz quadcore imac i7 it absoluletly flies, i haven't had to freeze a track yet..
i believe the performance test on the iMac was hovering around 17%... and that's with my audio setting at
128ms 48Khz 24 bit (the test is supposed to be run at 512, 44.1/16)
Don't need 4 cores?
buy one and send me the extra 2, 6 will be even better! LOL

infiniteloom wrote:I'll try to keep this short. I've been messing about with computers for the last 25 years. Unix, DOS, windows; I've seen them all and I can wrap my head around pretty much any computer problem. Two years ago, I bought a brand new vista machine. Performance was horrible. Fixed that and ran happily for a month or two. Installs, uninstalls, reinstalls, etc. And the computer was crawling again. Like my XP machine before it, and the W95 computer before that.
Fed up with playing system administrator (I do that enough at work), sold it all. Bought a Macbook pro in a crazed moment.
The moment I turned it on, I realized computers didn't have to be annoying anymore. The simplest things like not making a dumbass sound because some USB peripheral had just been plugged in. That day was the day I started using my computer instead of managing it.
Yes, Macs are intel machines. They're basically shiny PCs. But if you're only looking at that part of the picture, you're missing out. It's not the hardware, nor the software. It's the way everything comes together and just supports what you're doing. Your computer is finally a tool instead of a crutch.
If right now, the only thing standing between total bliss and you is a faster computer, then by all means just upgrade your windows PC. However, if you're constantly fighting it, as I was, look the other way. You'll never look back.
+1 on this.
anyone who needs to spend time fixing their computer instead of making music is the real moron in my opinion.
i started 20+ years ago too. went from *nix to dos to windows and then finally back to *nix when osx came out.
haven't looked back since. there are so many things wrong with dos/win it's not even funny anymore.
and yes i am a sysadmin at work too, the LAST thing i want to do if WORK when i am trying to make music.
(luckily my sysadminjob is 100% os x, so it's not really a job either!)

Another +1 on this.
I did Win tech support as a side gig for a time, used to optimize and maintain PCs and Macs for recording studios; have built a few pro audio and gaming PC systems for myself and family members; have managed FreeBSD, H-Sphere and CentOS servers for websites, and ran a WinXP / DOS / Ubuntu system for a time. My first computer was an Apple II though.
The best decision I ever made toward simplifying my life was moving to a Macbook Pro. The second best decision was deleting the WinXP partition off of it a year later.
@Derj... my recommendation is do it and don't look back.
