I wouldn't hold your breath on that either.

just being released isn't enough to change peoples whole game up. sure lots of people will buy them, think they have to have them. I'm sure they'll be hot in December and all that, but netbooks are already in peoples hands in a familiar format. as dum pointed out the specs hold their own (most folks don't want to run a DAW on em) and, variety is still the spice of life.

Yeah. I mean, it's not going to kill them immediately, of course. But they're on the same course as the CD-ROM. heh.

And when the HP tablet is released? Game over.

...if you say so dude.
these tech savvy showoffs you're talking about, do you see many of them in derry ?
At any rate this demograph you refer to will always be showing off with some piece of technology or another. That hardly moots the technology or it's intended purpose.
sounds to me like you've been taking more than your usual dosage of horse tranquillisers and alcopop.

I'm sure tablets will find a niche, and be successful. But I don't think it's going to be at the cost of netbooks. The netbooks have tactile keyboards, hugely important to hundreds of thousands of computer users. So far, it seems netbooks can out-spec similarly sized tablets too.

even if we don't consider price/spec differences (which I feel would continually favour netbooks - in similar sizes), I don't see myself giving up a netbook for the sake of a tablet. I don't care if tablets become huge or not - i may even buy one for some reason down the line, but there will always be a market for cheap & ultra-portable laptops aka netbooks.

who's to say.

I agree about the keyboards. But the tech is just going to get thinner and thinner. The tablets are going to eventually come in 2 parts - screen and detachable keyboard/screen cover. The only challenge will be the strength and design of the hinge mechanism. Hell, the keyboard add ons will be available right away, but they won't be integrated for convenience - just another thing you'll have to lug with you. Something like the design of the MacBook Air is where it's all going. Uber, uber thin and lightweight, yet in 2 bits.

no matter how advanced and diminutive the tech gets - people will want tactile keyboards.
what you seem to be describing with de\attachable keyboards is a convoluted laptop...

let's consider what I'm doing right now, I'm laying back with my injured foot raised on a couch...my good leg is bent at the knee - my netbook is open almost completely wide and propped up against my good leg - I'm cruising the net, listening to tunes, reading some articles, composing an email and right now I'm typing this. If I was to attempt this with a tablet it would suck.... touch screen keyboard ? no thanks. detachable keyboard ? no thanks. I'd have to use some peripherals to basically turn it into a convoluted netbook to make it a similarly comfortable experience...

even watching movies on a tablet is going to suck in comparison to a netbook/laptop, you'll need a little dedicated stand to make it stand upright on it's own. Will it be the right angle ? Or you can try propping it up yourself somehow with books and shit ? ...heh fail.

lol. I'm thinking more along the lines of something based on the existing HP tablets.

Only much thinner for both parts and the touch screen is fully detachable. Here. Check this out:

that's a laptop with a swivelling touchscreen monitor - I endorse this :P

Image

that's a netbook with a detachable touchscreen monitor - I endorse this also :P

but I get what you mean... those hybrids make way more sense to me than a solitary screen, if the hardware is of a decent build.

I'm still not hearing the netbook's death knell... inch for inch: price & spec will be in their favour for the foreseeable future. imo. and any tech advancements will benefit netbooks as much as tablets.

But I still think the straight netbook thing is on the way out. It was just a filler product between the iPad and low cost laptops, lol. Here's a pretty good article I remembered...

as long as the laptop paradigm is popular, there will be a market for diminutive laptops aka netbooks. The netbook category is not a filler, it's just taking off because it's commercially viable to do it now. If they could have sold laptops at this size for this price 5 yrs ago and turned the same profit they would have. The market for these devices was always there waiting to manifest, that's why I don't see it as a fad that will pass.

In fact, 5 yrs ago you would be charged a premium for the small size..

That article was kinda meh and as it turns out through the passing of time (article is nearly a year old) - full of fail, with flimsy subjective logic... reads like a forum post actually.
Anyway he's fixated on price point, which is I guess why he thinks Sony don't make netbooks...
they do - just they cost more, much more in some cases. At the time of publishing that article, sony had been selling high-price netbooks for about 6 months only they called them 'life style pcs'
and oddly enough about a week after the article was published sony OFFICIALLY started selling netbooks. still more expensive but 'only' by about ~$150, however they were also better spec than the cheaper netbooks available. 'netbooks rip' indeed - hoho!

Also, there was no mention of samsung in his article: mega-super-extreme-power fail.
Manufacturing arguably the finer netbooks on the market for some time.
