Oddly enough that's pretty much the recommended practice when getting attacked by brown bears. Play dead and hope it just chews on you a little and then leaves you alone when it doesn't see you as a threat (or food). However if you do fight back or run you're very very screwed. Your ability to remain insanely calm can literally be the difference between life and death at that point.

On the other hand you're supposed to fight like hell when you get attacked by a black bear.
