If Live goes 64bit, will I lose the use of my 32bit plugins?

Most if all of the plugins that you use, have also 64bit versions...

Agree that most, but not all, plugs will have 64 bit versions available. A potential work-around until everything goes 64 bit is something like jBridge (see for example http://andrewlandry.com/2010/12/the-move-to-64-bit/) which can allow 64 bit plugs to work with a 32 bit host (like Ableton) or use your old 32 bit plugs in a 64 bit host like Cubase. Not ideal and could be buggy, but a potential “bridge” until everyone goes 64 bit. Anyone with experience using jBridge?

Apologies. I have not used Pro Tools since version 7.4 and I am shocked to find that Pro Tools IS NOT 64 bit yet: http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=30 ... ight=64bit
However, in this Avid forum thread, I was reminded that Reaper is a fully 64 bit program. Apparently some composers ReWire Reaper into Pro Tools as a work around to use their 64 bit plugs. And so, rather than Pro Tools, I will experiment with using Reaper natively - or as a ReWire slave - until Ableton releases a 64 bit version.

Yep. I'm having quite some issues because I keep hitting the 4 gigabyte limit. I'd really appreciate an optional 64 bit build. It doesn't even have to be essential. An extra download would be just fine.

As I research this more, I am beginning to find lots of options to continue to use Ableton 32 bit while at the same time running 64 bit plug-ins. Even if Ableton becomes 64 bit, I think that the Vienna Ensemble PRO could become the standard bridge for folks who need to use large, CPU intensive plug-ins. Not only can the Vienna Ensemble PRO allow you to use 32 bit and 64 bit plug-ins simultaneously in a 32 bit host, but it can also spread the load across multiple computers on the same gigabit network plus mix-and-match Mac and Windows machines. Check it out at the following links. Note especially the reviewer on Sweetwater who is using tons of plug-ins consuming 24 GB of RAM without a glitch. The only downside is that Vienna Instruments requires you to use one of their USB dongles on each machine. Since I use my productions in live settings, I hate dongles; which is the only reason I am hesitant to order the Vienna Ensemble PRO and I may stay with the Reaper ReWire slave option for now:

I don't know about MidiPanic, but I have used Ensemble Pro (on my custom pc) and streamed into Live (on my mac). This not only "helps" get around the 64bit issue, but it minimizes cpu strain of plugins that use many effects for patches. I'd recommend if its in your budget to buy a slave pc. Add some SSDs with Trim support, and the performance doubles.

No. I am in the process of ordering Vienna Ensemble Pro. Vienna Instruments announced a 10% U.S. price increase effective two weeks ago due to the Euro exchange; so I am trying to find a U.S. vendor who still has inventory under the old price structure. In addition to the 64 bit bridge function, I am excited to get a chance to play around with the 9 GB Epic Orchestra. I have used the Vienna Instruments string samples included in Komplete 7 in several projects and like what I hear. I certainly don’t feel competent in the symphony sequencing scene, but the software and libraries being developed by Vienna Instruments for the symphony community is really, really impressive. If you haven’t seen them before, check out the videos describing the Vienna Suite of mixing and mastering tools: http://www.vsl.co.at/en/211/497/1686/454/1680/1095.htm

Many thanks to JBlongz for adding an Ableton user’s experience with Vienna Ensemble Pro. (BTW, I am always amazed at the talent pool in NYC like JBlongz. Nice website http://www.JBlongz.com !) His experience further reinforces my impression that a product like Vienna Ensemble Pro will become a standard for folks who use large sample libraries; regardless of whether we are using a 32 bit or 64 bit host.

Even though I use Ableton in live performances, I can see where Vienna Ensemble Pro would allow me to include a rack-mounted PC or Mac to extend the power of my laptop host. Lots of possibilities to freely mix-and-match 32 & 64 bit hosts and plugs on one or more machines.
