Who has the simplest setup? You gear freaks... ;o)
The magazine phase is important, you have to know what's out there and how to do things... internet forums dedicated to software and gear... when I found they didn't teach me much anymore, i let them go. I don't think it was a waste of time or money at all, just a rite of passage most of us go through.
I love my Access Virus Classic. But I reach for the Nord2 more often cause I can shape a sound so much faster. Maybe I should sell it for a better Nord.

Are there are more 3 year old threads we can revive and pimp up ?
I'm a gear junkie. I'm a DAW junkie. I'm in counselling for it but am not making much progress.
One thing I will say - Since I got the Live 7 Suite, I am using it MOST of the time for EVERYTHING, including the new synths.
However, there are some tracks and projects where I need to do less with Live (which is my go to compositional tool for 100% of my work) and use other DAWS and plugins to finish the task. It would take me too long to list the plugins and stuff and I would feel too decadent in writing such a list. As for the DAW situation, it's only because of Live being too CPU intensive on my ageing computer which I cannot afford to upgrade right now, or because I needed some extra MIDI or audio editing functionality which is better served in another DAW. This is still the exception though, rather than the rule.

I totally agree.Incy wrote:The magazine phase is important, you have to know what's out there and how to do things... internet forums dedicated to software and gear... when I found they didn't teach me much anymore, i let them go. If they would just address the interfaces of their synths (lose the TV window), I think I'd be happy using just the Live 7 Suite. As it stands now, I have Logic 8 too, plus a Machinedrum and Korg EMX-1. That's pretty much it. Oh, and Zebra2, though I seem to use it less and less lately for no real reason.

this thread makes me sad. I've had this huge writers block lately and it makes me think oif when I just had a g4 desktop reason 2.0 and Digital Performer 4 something.I wrote the most creative shit ever. it didn't sound good because subtractor sucks balls...or at least i didnt know how to get a good sound out of it. but i did some of my best stuff with it. working on structure more then try to get a cool synth sound. now i have 3 pieces of hardware i force myself to use. a Mc909, korg EMX 1, and a jp8000. i would use the mc90 more if for some reason it didn't lag behind the rest of my gear. i can't firgure out the timing issue.
but the most creative stuff I write is during lunch at work when i just have my laptop.
I think I could write a great album with just my drums. a guitar, reason, and reaktor.
the rest of the stuff is just distracting. but i refuse to give it up. or put it away. damn im stubborn....

My first music was done simply with an Akai S20, Korg Prophecy and Korg Pandora, I sold the prophecy and then made music only in reason on an old clamshell iBook for years and most of the stuff was done just using that. I've since just use Ableton Live on a macbook pro with an MPD-24 and a pair of headphones and that's it, no plug ins, very rarely hook up an audio interface and I produce most of my sounds from sampling through the built in mic and creating micro harmonics and layering with simpler. I extract some hits and grooves from mp3's but that's about it.
I think gear is good if you've got a deadline, I've done some work for TV quite a bit, and I miss the luxury of having something like Logic or reason with loads of instruments and presets to quickly get going and draught an idea out, but i like making things difficult for myself
