Spoke last night to an employee from another branch that is also losing half the staff and she told me the new owners didn't offer one of the guys there a job because they felt he's overqualified. I asked her how and she said he's only about 12 credits away from having a degree. What the fuck kind of back woods hillbilly establishment thinks somebody who almost has a degree is overqualified?! "Check out Mr. intellectual fancy pants with his almost degree".

Cuz the "overqualified" is bullshit; to them that's the best tactic they can come up with; a "silver lining" psychology. There is no concept of truth being a reasonable answer in their world; when in fact it could be the respectable and honorable one. They're getting canned anyway so why does it matter if they tell the truth? (Not that it matters, you should know anyway). And hey, what better way to add distrust to the system than being full of shit and propagating the illusion of superiority?

Why have 3 payrolls when you can have 1 for just a little bit more than the price of those 3? All they have to do is find someone who is willing to be submissive "across the board" that will make that "career" their 24/7 lifestyle because they're just as desperate enough to keep an income. A spouse and children is more justification.

I really think this is a golden time for people to start their own businesses.

I had another section expanding on that but thought it might've gotten too OT and TMI but it's a lot more basic and grounded than just being an general ideological diatribe on the nation. Plus I ended up being talking to an old friend on the phone for the rest of the night.

The main basis from that statement comes from working with a large company that provides payroll/accounting services to small businesses , and I've learned a lot. Can expand on it later, but it's more about the success of local businesses doing well in this economy, and the fact that that process is more basic than you'd think, at least in terms of expenses (given you have good credit).

From a management/HR point of view, there is always a problem when someone gets their degree. Usually this is the time when people leave the company to go get a better job with their new qualifications. Often times, the company has financially helped the person pay for school, and then loses that investment the instant that the person graduates. I'll admit I've done this myself. The only alternative is to offer the person who got the degree more money to stay, and often it's paying more money to a person who keeps doing the same they were doing before they finished the degree program. From the owner's point of view, it can be a lose/lose situation.

I'm not saying that it isn't a shitty thing to do, but if you owned the company, that's probably the way you yourself would be thinking.

And koranek, why does the picture on your "Counseling" page look like people are waiting to film a softcore porn scene?

I can understand that, but at the same time jobs aren’t exactly growing on trees right now for any education level. It’s a lot harder for people to just jump ship because suddenly they are certifiably smart. But the traditions and statistics of business practices are slow to adjust…well unless we’re talking about screwing people. That kind of change is generally made pretty quickly.
