money.
Actually for me the two main reasons are customizability and the amount of software. My custom built Windows PC is essentially silent, while still being pretty powerful. Can't have that with even the most expensive Mac.
I won't say Windows is great because I don't think it is. But for me it "just works", I don't have any problems with it. I wish it would evolve a bit faster, but the game MS plays is backwards compatibility and pleasing the biggest number of people, which has its pros and cons.

i was going to say this also but whenever building a computer you have the chance of something not working with something else. i will admit though that in the last few years it has became pretty easy to throw new parts with new parts and everything works fine.
also since windows 7 i have not had one single computer crash. not one! i have had ableton crash but the operating system has never crashed. so its safe to say windows is now very stable. its ugly but its stable. the design of every pc looks like shit but at least its stable eh?
fucking macs look so pretty!!!!!!

dont any of you mac users ever get excited about nerding it out on your computer?
you know pissing with settings to get the most out of your computer. installing other operating systems just for the hell of it?
i read all the time that mac users are suppose to be tech savy but its like most dont know how a computer works.
it seems like audio geeks would be the most inclined to mess with settings.
i have a question though, when do you consider yourself a mac user?
is it when you totally drop all other os'es and just use mac? or is some one like me who uses both but windows more a mac user also?
its became so confusing as to who is in the club and who isnt.
what if you own an android phone but use mac os for everythig?
are you really a mac user then?
what if you uninstall itunes on your mac and use winamp?
what if you never use any apple apps but just use the computer
what if you uninstall the mac os and use windows on a macbook?
how i feel is if you do any of the above you are not in the mac club.

OK. I am a geek (though one with a social life) that likes installing OS's blah blah blah. I've worked in tech support in various roles supporting both windows and Unix boxes. I use a Windows machine in work for the most part. Apart from when I was in college (15 years ago), I have used used Windows machines for years for audio and other personal stuff - from 3.1 to XP (my work laptop is now Win7). Around 5 or 6 years ago, I decided to buy a mac for 2 reasons. 1) I used Logic and wanted to continue using it with upgraded versions. 2) I was sick of having to buy a new laptop every year. I did buy higher end Windows based laptops too which maybe lasted 2 years max.
The thing is (as someone mentioned earlier), for most people having the ability to fuck around with settings is a CON - whether you are a tech nerd or not. And why would you want to if your machine just works? I would not call myself an apple fanboy as I cannot see myself buying an iPhone or iPad given their ludicrous pricing when other products have as much functionality, longevity as them, or I simply do not need them. But from personal experience, I am on only my second macbook pro in 5 years and have rarely had as much as a sniff of a crash, so using macs is actually more cost effective for me. It just works and lasts a long time and cause me less stress.
This forum is talking about creating music, and to do that, I (and I guess most people on here) want a machine that just performs and performs well with as little (non music related) user intervention as possible. In my opinion and in my experience, that is what OSX with a decent model macbook pro provides - out of the box. OK it costs a bit more, but it saves on the aggravation I had for many years on Windows based laptops and to me that is worth it. Well that and the fact I know I won't have to buy another laptop in a year or two's time. It is a fair point to say you could customize a laptop for audio running Windows that may work as well and last longer. If you want to do that, fine - I really hope it works out well and you don't have the same aggravation I have had. And I really mean that. But just like you don't want to hear people banging on about macs, you don't need to diss mac users. It's like reverse snobbery - acting in the exact same manner as apple fanboys while thinking you are taking some moral high ground.
But to read stupid comments like "mac users are suppose to be tech savy but its like most dont know how a computer works" is plain ignorant and prompted me to bother responding to this ridiculous argument. And "it seems like audio geeks would be the most inclined to mess with settings" is even more ridiculous. I also consider myself an audio geek and for that very reason, when I go to do some "audio geeky" stuff, I don't want to prick around with settings for 3 hours before forgetting why I turned the machine on in the first place. It is an unwelcomed distraction from my primary objective - writing music. Fucking ridiculous topic and post. Use whatever you want or works for you within your budget and get on with it.

Thank you, Trevox, for succinctly stating why I've abstained from responding to this thread.
Use what you like. Don't use what you don't like. Liking something doesn't make one a fanboi. Bitching at other people on the internet because they like the thing that you don't, or vice versa, on the other hand...

Last year I bought a Lenovo laptop, and with the money I saved from not buying the equivalent MBP laptop, I spent on a Moog Voyager...so macs are for people who hate Moogs, IMO!

I'm on a two month old macbook air right now trying to find a panasonic toughbook that comes with a pcmcia slot for a good price.
so if you see a leprechaun with one shoe one the left foot and one shoe on the right but you can't see his legs then you kick'em in the shins and you tell him that Lil ss from the westside ableton gang said put the pcmcia slots back on the computers or else something really bad is going to happen.
