do you remember when music really meant something to you? When it meant something to society? The more I listen to popular music nowadays the less it appeals to me. The last time I listened to something that made me feel anything "transcendent" was Steve Reich at the Barbican. Now I'm sure part of that is me getting on a bit, but I'm just not excited by any popular music nowadays. I was excited by Justice (or more properly SebastiAn) back in 2006/2007, but that got old so fast. I used to feel passion for new music, sound and so on, but now. Shit.

Popular Music used to be about rebellion, the counter culture, full of hot sweaty energy where people let go of themselves. Now it really does seem that it's all about conformism and making a quick buck as cheaply as possible.

I want to hear people experimenting - not just copying each other, or even thinking experimentation is an excuse for noise - you have 12 tones you can have in an almost infinite number of variations, stop getting hung up on harmony and block piano chords - do something with them, play with melodies, time signatures, fuck sake do something - but most of all express your individuality - don't just jump on a fucking band wagon.

And paradoxically the sheer number of Sexual references in music seems to rob it of any sexual charge. Never has Sex in the mainstream been so Asexual as it is in the most explicit pop of Rhianna et al. Take Little Richard, The Sonics, or Jerry Lee Lewis - their music bubbled with abandon, now pop is so overproduced it sounds.... inhuman. It's like watching a glossy porn vid where the performers all have dead eyes. It looks nice but lacks any excitement. Necrotainment.

Maybe it's because I am also gettng on a bit, but have to agree totally
