Regarding updates, thats exactly why people built their own Mac's

On Fusion drives. So hopefully the audio issues have been worked out. I wasn’t able to find a recent post about problems still existing. I just didn’t know if anybody on here had some personal experience.

Would it be a bad idea to clone the drive from my current iMac to a Fusion drive iMac? Or actually I guess I could clone it from the Time Machine back up. In any case, bad idea? Also I think it’s too soon for Yosemite. Any issues cloning from a drive that has Mavericks to a computer that has Yosemite on it by default?

No need to clone a drive, just restore from your time machine back up, done.

Hopefully when I get a new iMac it won't be because my current one is toast and I'll have time to test it out before I do the full switchover.

That's completely wrong, typical for armchair engineers As machines get ever smaller, the extra space connectors take up in all three dimensions is too precious.

Sockets and connectors are not used so users can swap parts...read the warranty about opening the box up...it's so a single board can be easily reconfigured at manufacturing time (saves on inventory costs and lead times) and repairs are faster (thus cheaper).

sorry, not buying it. laptop RAM is small. that's what they use in Macbooks and iMacs. i've built too many computers (triple digits) to be considered an armchair engineer. also, i'm not sure if you've priced RAM, but some of the best RAM on the market doesn't touch the premium price Apple charges for an upgrade. if your logic is essentially 'that's because Apple made it more complicated to change the RAM' then ok, but that doesn't change my stance on their pricing in the least.

...and it doesn't make it any faster to do repairs. it takes longer to open one up and get into the chassis then it does to swap the RAM. swapping RAM takes less than a minute if it's not soldered in place - if it is, your argument is moot.

I've got my MSEE/CS and been designing computers and comms devices for 30 years. Plus my mom can beat up your mom

Getting everything to fit into a ultrathin MacBook is a lot different than slapping cards and drives into a tower chassis. I'm just saying...

it doesn't matter anyway. we will accept it at the wallet level or switch brands.

The real reason factory RAM (from anyone...not just Apple) cost more is that prices fall constantly on memory and storage but mfrs order their inventory 6 months or more in advance to keep their manufacturing pipelines full.

You only have to pay today's prices when buying from the RamsRUs.com outfits.

BTW I always buy my computers with the smallest RAM and drives I need immediately and upgrade them to the max a year or so later to save even more money. My current iMac was the first without a user replaceable drive which was a drag but I did upgrade the RAM myself. It is unfortunate that as devices shrink that cost savings will be lost. Now I have to plan on buying the max RAM up front or pay $$$$ for a service center to do the upgrade later.

noob. the thread is about "repairing won't fix the problem".

As an owner of a 1 year old 21" iMac (which I did not upgrade @ buy time, too much $$$) I am now left with the only option to attach a TB External drive and boot from there if I want more speed. However its 5400RPM and 8GB Ram does what I need. All my Ableton Data is on USB 3 channel and with proper 7200 RPM drives I have good access to library and projects. On one side Apple is reducing Computers to appliances like someone else said and I agree. The lock down of the Mini has recently completed the step. However Tarekith told about the Service and I have Apple Care so for the next 2 years I'll be ok. Yosemite is there but I won't upgrade until all my gear has drivers. So I have a stable system and it's protected by Apple Care. Sure real professional users should buy for the future, as the iMac 27" provides more RAM when you need it but all depends on what you do. For me the iMac is still the best option even if Apple is doing wrong IMHO to lock down their computer line to mere appliances as they were phones...let's what happens in the next years.
