Right on target bro, very well said. Thats it--Live has the most kick-ass interface and intuitive dealing with audio. Adding equally well thought out midi capabilities would open ableton up to a HUGE market that hasn't been tapped due to the lack of MIDI--Live is currently a bit of a niche or specialty software, that is quickly catching on as the work spreads. Its DAW crack--once you try it, you can't really go back (NOT supporting crack here at all, never tried it, just making a point at how addictive Live is). If Live were to implement MIDI, I think it would only be a matter of time before it became one of the dominant DAWs on the market. That huge inflow of $ from the new market would mean that many more developers and manpower at Ableton, thus an increasingly better product with faster upgrades and bug fixes. So even for the MIDI haters, the added features and in turn bling bling would make Live a better and better product, weather you use MIDI or not.

Nice to read through all that posts.

Personally I use MIDI and virtual instruments. And sometimes I would like to use MIDI the same way as audio in live. And I would love to see a host for VSTis on the Mac.
But I do not think that MIDI in Live would be that great. First - MIDI would not e another feature - it would add a totally different approach. And then there comes the asking for more and more. This feature and that feature - etc.
I think it is good if a company reacts on the demands of their costumers - but they should still watch their ideas. Live is that great because it is streamlined. (As is Reason and Melodyne.)
It was the problem of the traditional sequencers that they had to add more and more features into a programm that was written for MIDI.

There is enough to add - AU on Mac perhaps, surround sound, VST support while in ReWire slave mode (on Mac interesting), freely customizable short cuts, delay compensation, read something that DSP cards are not supported, etc. Not to mention audio reverse and so on.

Just my thoughts

you are right, that would be horrible - that too much like in logicubase.
but imagine a slimline, no bullshit vsti host like the sequencer in reason or the one in tracktion (You won't notice it's there until you use it) or protools.
for myself I don't even need a midi out - and I think many of the live community are the same - just a laptop, I/O - box and everything else is virtuality
no editing overflow, but just the possibility to record a keyboard performance and even more important - have it in the arrange so I can handle it like any audio clip - something rewire can't achieve...
personally I like to work in an integrated workspace and not to use the apple - tab command all the time
so now it's like using reason instruments like hardware synthies - I record them as audio, because I think having audio and midi sequenzes in two windows is not at all concise - but if later I decide, I want to tweak the sound a little bit - oh no, I have to record it again...
do I have to buy tracktion or will my favorite software provide the means I need to get the work done?

sorry anonymous,

I hope it is not integrated in a way you would need vsti as a track input - that would mean I would have a midi channel AND a vst-channel (I think that's the way cubase and protools handle it.
I would like to have an instrument channel (like in logic or tracktion)
that means:

midi controller on the track input
vsti as a effect plugin

the idea is to have only one channel for the instrument - freeze would be cool, too, especially for us poor mac-users

for editing I could imagine that basic funktion
a simple pianoroll editor with the ability to write, delete and drag events (notes, velocity) - could be in the clip view instead of the waveform of an audio clip
everything else could be handled the same way as with audio (the content of the edit menu)
man, would I be happy...

well, AU support would not be bad either (there are some pretty good and cheap AUi's by Urs heckmann I would like to try in live)

Your wrong.why cant you people please get it in to your heads That adding midi Will Not turn Live in to a Bloated Logic clone. Get Real, Logic has to still work with their ten year old ccode and they have people who have used it that long so they simply keep all that crap in there to pacify old users.

Thi si sthe year 2003 and Ableton can implement a modern midi system to Live. Basically if they just implement it as if you were working with audio then Liv ewill look and feel exactly the same.

I mean doooods. Giv ethe Ableton guys some credit for what they might do in teh future.

OH, you want reverse.....just use your audio editir...NO....Why Not???? OH I SEE YOU WANT AN ALL IN ONE SOLUTION

exact , mIdi could become interesting if they treated it like they treated audio

true!
my midi keyboard be the input
my virtual instrument be the plugin
a pianoroll and that's all

(as we already have a pencil for those who don't like to play)

true , i didn't thought to it but driving mIdI loops from my elektribeM would
be great (so i that won't have to record 550mo sequences ..............)

If live is a 21st century app then it needs a 21st ventury approach to the midi, not the boring track based garbage that grew out of people not having access to the power we have available now anyway.

I think MIDI incorporation is a must with Live. However, I don't think that the current, Audio driven version of Live needs it. I think Live should create a seperate MIDI sequencing application that integrates seemlessly with the audio version. this version would use the same nonlinear principles as the audio version. The advantage of a seperate Ableton Designed Midi app would be that it could act as a separate virtual MIDI controller which you could use as a standalone sequencer without even running the audio version of Ableton Live. You could then use this Ableton Virtual MIDI to control all your other synths virtual and or hardware. so yea, we just need another Ableton created application that handles MIDI in a new way. I don't think Numerolgy is the answer because it's environment is no where near as intuitive as Abletons.
The best, best songs are utterly forgettable.

midi would take live to the next phase

yUp :)
kind a good iddea, maybe that what ableton thinks
a software that integrates midi same as live , aimed to VSti or else , n that can run loops like live , aimed to run live set .
that mean that don't integrates recording features........
hUm sounds good with a rewire to tracktor

oh please not another rewire app. i wanna see audio and midi in one arrangement.
mostly I do theatre music and cues always change so I have a lot of work cutting time, pasting time. with a rewire app with its own sequenzer I loose control.
as a workaround i record every instrument from reason to live (audio), but that kind of sucks, too. personally I need plugins in live - at least until tracktion works in osx. but I'd rather stay with live with midi sequenzing.
