I am scared of VISTA. I think it will render my mbox and most shareware plugs useless, so i might as well get a mac if that becomes the case. those IMACs are looking nicer everyday. I would love to have imovie, i have a digital camcorder ( canon zr200) and have shot many cools things from east to west coast to mexico that i would like to edit with ease. The PC process is a little dumb, although I do like adobe premiere (6.5 more than pro)

So, is the consensus clear? I am getting the idea that it is just bad to buy first generation lappies right now. I have a feeling that when the new models come out around Xmastime, many of these issues will be resolved.

That is how it is with every mac product.. the first gen is always usless... but by the next gen everything should be fine.

So if they install the core 2 duo on the macbook, would that be considered a second generation, or just a CPU upgrade?

But I would consider it 2nd Generation.

if your really concerned then many wait a few more weeks but the upgraded kogic and heatsinks are already finding thier way into new macbooks. apple makes updates to their machines throughout the life of them. the macbook pros have had one "speed boost" update but have had about several logic board revisions in thay time to make them work better. i'd say if your worried give it a few weeks to get the older models out of the supply line or if you do happen to get one now that shuts down, just take it in and get the logic replaced.

cool. That's what I suspected. I wonder what revisions they will have to make to the logic boards for the core 2 duo, aren't they suppose to generate less heat though?

Anyone gigging with a first-gen machine has got bigger balls than me! I wouldn't do it. I can't risk letting paying customers down.

IMO, it's far more important to have solid reliability than the latest go-faster machine, even if it means giving up a few of the latest-greatest CPU-sucking features.

I refuse to do Apples hardware beta testing!

On this line though, the first generation titainium powerbooks were far better than the second generation, the 400mhz model actually beat the 667mhz model in Logic Platinum Verb tests.
You can't always rely on the 'first generation rule', basically you should wait and see with any computer model before you purchase.
My Macbook Pro is probably second shipping batch, same model, but I don't get any of the symptoms people have mentioned on the internet. Probably about now, the macbooks are sorted, the earliest models can role out with problems, or in the case of the 667 powerbook, lamer chips.

OK, good news for those who want refunds.

depending what country you are in, you are protected as a consumer by something called 'Lemon Law'. it basically states that if a manufacturer gives you a defective product and cannot remedy the situation within a 'reasonable time' you can get a full refund or another product from that manufacturer.

'reasonable time' for computers is 7-10 days!

sooo, if your macbook has been in the shop for a week, you can get a refund!

i am on a loaner macbook right now, but i need to make sure that this never ever happens again. i would even pay to upgrade to a MBP but apple won't let me.

is there any magic word you can say that will make them give you a refund? i have been a real squeaky wheel and managed to get a direct line to executive customer relations. there has to be a way. this is just awful.

According to service repair report the only mention about second generation parts refers to "Topcase with Keyboard (Rev 2) has been received"... The motherboard is described as "Board Logic, 1.83 GHz, 13" MB" - no revision number at all...
As far as "magic word", well I was 3 times unlucky in space of just 28 days. Ask to speak directly to Customer Service Manager, be firm but very patient, polite and clearly state Your intentions - they are "human" to You know and above all good luck... Even though I had a really bad experience with my MacBook, I loved it a lot and will definitely buy Rev 2 when available. Also apparently RSD issue is resolved now - Apple has redesigned the heat-sink and the new MacBooks (Week 36 and over) and recent (1 week old) repairs prove to be RSD-Free. Hope that helps...

another random shutdown victim here...the last thing i want to deal with right now seeing as i just moved from the states to the UK don't have time to spend on the phone with apple and regent street isn't taking genius bar reservations right now...

guess I'll have to send it back eventually...just don't want to deal right now...

and my flat mate just started having the same problem on hers. Don't want to turn this into a pc/mac debate...but yeah this is pretty messed up that this has happened, definitely shaken my confidence in apple.
