You can set just the curser to a point and do 'conventional' split.
sure i am. why do you think i didn't get that?
I guess because I can't see a big difference between the 'e' key and the 's' key...

I would love to see a sleek crossfade function built into the arrange window. The auto crossfades in Live work most of the time, but you get a pop/click if the two parts don't match at the boundary (I get this alot on vocals/strings). In Pro Tools you just select a bit of each region at the boundary and hit cmd-f, but I think Ableton could do it better...
It would be sweet if you could click on a specified location somewhere at the boundary then drag up or down to increase/decrease the crossfade length. The cursor could change to an appropriate icon/symbol when you hover over the specified boundary location (just like the zooming in the ruler). Also, right-clicking while hovering at the specified location would give the user a dropdown of predefined crossfade curves (like for the a/b crossfader in Live 6).
This would be sweet and non-intrusive and freaking quick, just like the rest of Live; I love the click-drag-zoom function. Which leads to the sidenote...
In addition to Live's "smart cursor" (i.e. hover over specified area and the cursor changes to a different tool) it would be sick if each tool could be used independent of hover location via a modifier key (e.g. zoom tool = ctrl+shift+click/drag, trim tool = opt+ctrl+click/drag, proposed crossfade tool = cmd+opt+click/drag, etc.). Allowing access to multiple tools from any cursor location in the arrangement would really improve Live's workflow.

more than 128 vst parameters
bezier curves
ability to properly handle 3rd party midi plugins
crossfade recorded takes
group/folder tracks
audio pool window w. editing capabilities
better autoreplace in the library. causes problems when searching/replacing sampled instruments (do i really want to tell it which candidate 500 times?)

So far the things I've noticed have been more minor annoyance than huge omission, things like:
- no proper time display
- no track folders
- needs better track-grouping abilities
- no track lanes/composite recording
A big issue that did get fixed in 6 is the meters, although it's still a bit of a pain that you can only see the numeric markers in Session view after manually widening them one at a time. In Sonar you have a number of options on how your meters look, including colors, segmented or not, numerical scale, horizontal or vertical appearance (horizontal is way better) etc...
I'm really curious what keeps you power users loyal to Logic and Cubase and such?
In a single word.............

I really need better midi capabilities (the lame automation, piano roll, and 128 parameter limits are killers) and cross fading and group tracks is a must too. Oh and wet/dry for vst effects. And, um, a whole bunch of other stuff. But mostly those.
I'm seriously considering moving over to cubase, but I hear bad things about their customer service and stability these days. I tried sonar but it crashes every time I do anything (no, literally. anything). I'm getting really frustrated with my lack of good options and I wish ableton stepped up to the plate with 7 instead of dicked around with adding more bullshit sampled content and third party plugs that nobody cares about.
And from what I can tell, they're not about to fix that goddamn 128 parameter bug anytime soon either.
SAME ON YOU ableton. You should have fixed that years ago.

It's not a bug, it a limit set by steinberg so it can't see it changing unless the vst standard does.

really does my head in to!

Then why is it that I can automate these parameters in sonar and cubase and even fucking Fruityloops?

Am i missing something? i was presuming you were saying about the maximum of 128 parameters. Can "cubase" automate more than 128?

They all can. Live sets an limit at the 128th parameter, but there are vsts out there with hundreds, even thousands of parameters. Every other DAW out there lets you automate whatever parameters you wish. Live, well, doesn't.

I don' know what to say now, im creating a plugin for dmx lighting and ran out of parameters so i had to split the plugin and create 3. now i got so much more work to do

I don't want live to be a DAW anymore. I think that's screwin it up.

+1
it's convenient insofar as there may be things you need to use for general audio engineering etc, but I think if they head too much into DAW land they wil definitely be in danger of making a mess of it
