well done - this is only the Nth time you've flaked out.
Why, is an edit to you "flaking out"? Seems to me easier to add to a previous statement than extend the thread.

fight ?...oh, you mean disagreement ?

oh yes - I forgot I should play nice in fairyland and agree with everyone or at least make statements in such a manner that they are not overtly disagreeable with my peers. sugarcoating I think they call it

Music might not have rules but it definately has laws.

I like Brian Eno's definition of art as being everything that we do that we dont HAVE to do. We have to move but we don't have to dance, we have to communicate but we don't have to write poetry, etc.

Ok, back to the bitchin.

(and this started out as such a nice little thread)

cage's silence crap is only ever referred to by friends who have no musical training or musical technical skills.

widely referred to as 'music' its widely refertred to as an experiement.

music whether you know the rules / laws or not is still derived from very specific rules.

someone mentioned listening to jazz and not knowing what rules there are... well do you have to know how a car is built to drive it?

does it mean that because you dont know the laws/rules for all the engineering which goes into a car that there are none?

this isnt quite the sound of a tree falling in a forest here...

jazz and all modern music, especially stuff that uses any modern tuning is based on science and nature. http://www.kylegann.com/histune.html#hist3

It is ALSO widely regarded as an experiment. It's not difficult to understand that because it is regarded as one thing does not mean it is not regarded as another. I don't think it would be famous controversial piece if only idiots were arguing over it. And your car analogy is wrong here. I used jazz as an example to illustrate that you can appreciate something as music even if you don't understand the rules. You are arguing over a point you agree on. Read the thread closely next time. And Bounce, where did I disagree with you? Couldn't resist one last post...going to bed now

where did I say that you disagreed with me ?

I disagreed with you however, when you said 4'3" was 'widely regarded' as music.
