Ed Banger / SebastiAn
hi armchair. yea i agree about the dbglitch. its def good for some of those effects, but im more talking about the timing / stuttering / shuffling of sounds. I was just checking out your myspace...good stuff. That track Pigeon has exactly what im thinking of. The stuttering of the synth sounds, off the beat, always coming in a 16th note earlier or later than the downbeat. What was your technique for doing those synth lines in that track? def diggin it!

@musikgod: Like a Toggle Mute/unmute? Dont know how to set this up, but you can automate Mute/unmute in the Arrangement view (Track>Monitor on/off). Did some neat shit with this too, there is some serious crackling going on if youre not careful but nevertheless it rocks too.
Mix all the of techniques mentioned above to fulfill your dreams

yea more or less to "play" muting of a track. Just an idea on how to achieve cutting up a loop or sound. The problem is the MUTE button acts like a real mixer mute button - it changes on the release of the key. I'd want it so when i press a key down, the track mutes, but when i release that key, it unmutes. It'd be like gating, but only when u have a key held down. Ive tried this with a sidechain, but sidechaining is more of a DUCK, whereas i want a full OFF.
Either way this is just an idea ive had in my head. Any other technique ideas would be grand.
I'm really interested as to armchair's technique in his Pigeon track!!!

have you tried triggering audio clips in session in one of the Launch modes?musikgod wrote:yea more or less to "play" muting of a track. Just an idea on how to achieve cutting up a loop or sound. so you can 'play' the muting of clips..
just assign some midi keys to a bunch of clips and start playing..
very effective..
pigeon/bass stuttering
hi mark/everyone
thanks for listening to the tunes. it's kind of difficult to explain how we managed to get the stuttering effect on the bass in pigeon. the bass part of the track is a combination of a dx7 through heavy overdrive (the main bassy sound), a snatch of a disco loop and very small snippets of a very distorted moog square wave providing the accents, we didn't really set out with the final effect in mind but through trial and error we just sliced the moog and the disco loop to play off the dx7.
i've got the parts solo'd now and i'm cycling it but i can't really explain step by step how the effect was achieved. we basically wanted to use the disco loop and moog sample as almost percussive elements to complement the bass part.
this probably doesn't help at all does it?
oh and there's no sidechaining at all on this tune, just hard limiting and multiband compression on the master for the breathing effects.

cool thanks for the response. May I ask how you "sliced" or programmed the stuff in? Just curious as to if your approach is different than mine.
Were u working with MIDI or audio when sequencing? meaning, did u have these sounds sampled and being played via MIDI track or were u working off the audio clips?
I usually sequence with MIDI, and then clean up the sequence, changing indiviual notes, start points, loop point, etc. So im curious as to your approach cause seriously approach can mean everything.
Also, wondering if u quantize? I tend to not quantized anything anymore and trust my ears...sometimes purposely making sounds a lil off. I feel quantizing keeps things too strict in terms of rhtyhm...but again, maybe our approaches are differnet...But just curious as to if u quantize or not...

we didn't play in any stuff live on this track, the dx7 was sequenced just by looping the 8 bars in the piano roll and using the good old point and click method, changing the note lengths etc as we went along. i think we then ran the full warped disco loop and the moog loop (which was flattened from another tune we were working on) over the dx7 sequence and just sliced them up in the arrange window by selecting and deleting the bits we didn't want until the groove worked, by which point there was hardly any of the moog or disco loop left in the phrase.
there's no extra quantising aside from the warping of the original moog and disco loop clips.
it was just a process of trial and error really... again, that's probably not so helpful is it?

@musikgod: destroyfx's 'midi gater' plug is what you need. put it on the audio track you want to gate and send midi to the plug from a midi track. the gate 'opens' as long as a key/pad/controller is pressed, and 'closes' when you let go. also has a/d and floor controls, and is velocity sensitive... this can also be used for accents by setting the floor pretty high and hitting a key whenever you want an accent on the audio.

thanks buckman. yeah, all done in live 6, some recorded dx7 stuff but all the rest is soft synths and samples. software sidechain compression and then software multiband compression and limiting on the master. vintage warmer and the wonderful sonalksis compressors mainly.
these are the first tunes we've done so we're still getting to grips with mixdowns and compression but i'm really glad you like them

Thanks Scientist! This is exactly what I was looking for!
Also thanks for the insight armchair. That does help. nothing new or fancy like i was thinking, but it all helps to know approach, cause everyone's will be slightly different.
now on to some playing around!

Great!
What sidechain compressor? Im on the mac and cant seem to find a software one for live 6?
And what software multiband compression and limiting plug ins?
How did you do your cutting? I love this sound (i actually started this thread and its great to see it still going!)
Do you use SAMPLER in live 6? I would like diff samples cut up on diff keys like SebastiAn style but simpler doesnt do that, and impulse is a bit limited..
Do you import a warped track and cut it up on the timeline???
