here's a guy who almost single handedly brought idm/techno/trance influences to mainstream RnB during the last decade, making it actually fairly interesting music. Whatever you think about the artists he makes tracks for, his tracks are pretty well crafted.

As far as his sampling controversy, yeah, that was terrible. But it was one track that he got busted on, and i don't think he actually understood what he was sampling from. Not that that's an excuse, but take a look at the bigger picture. Before timbaland, the vast majority of hip hop and rnb production was entirely sample loop based. After timbaland you have more and more productions that are all sequence based, in fact, now the majority of mainstream hip hop and RnB is sequence based! Now, that wasn't entirely timbaland, but it was a BIG reason towards that shift. I don't think you would have heard somebody like the neptunes come off unless timbaland had been there first.

besides, a great deal of the people complaining about timbo's sampling controversy are working in or fans of music that shamelessly uses uncredited samples anyway.

and, everybody cums all over dangermouse and his grey album, and other mash up projects, aren't those just as fucked up, if not more so?




anyone who says timbaland productions are "over compressed" is throwing around a buzz phrase without understanding it. It's no more overcompressed than any current electronic dance music that's out there. And that the vocals are over produced and the signers don't write their own lyrics??? this is coming from people who are defending trance? Those are two major offenses (if you consider it an offence) of music that people call trance. (not that i have a problem with "trance" i don't even think the term means anything at this point. now, i have problems with some individual producers stuff, but thats a different story)

Trance is actually great as long as it's done right. Especially the trance from the mid-nineties is brilliant, as it actually focused on entrancing unlike the pop'ish stuff they call trance nowadays.

There's been some good recent trance as well though. Check out the albums "Whirloop - A Fascination For Clouds" and "Solar Fields - EarthShine" for example.

Does over-produced mean that it sounds too good? Always wondered.

Not a fan of R&B in general, but really disliked the "get a 2 bar sample of a well known record, repeat throughout, throw an MPC beat behind it and sing something that doesn't complement the sample at all" style of R&B.

So I've got to agree with LM on that point.

You are wrong there. BUT AS I STATED EARLIER, THE REASON I FIND IT OVERCOMPRESSED MIGHT BE BECAUSE I ONLY HEAR SUCH TRACKS IN THE RADIO, and the local radio stations often add way too much compression.

I am pretty damn well sure i said that somewhere. So if you just read what people write instead of saying shit maybe you'd be a bit more relaxed eh?

And that the vocals are over produced and the signers don't write their own lyrics??? this is coming from people who are defending trance?

If its me you're after you are again missing a point. I don't like vocal trance. I like melodic trance. In melodic trance, there are no vocals (or if any, they are chopped and definently over processed).

You are judging music without the reference to judge it. You're saying timbaland's production style is "over compressed", yet you haven't heard any of it outside of a medium that you believe compromises it? So FM radio is overcompressed or Timbaland's production style?

I know but i think he got some awards for that in 06 too. and earlier, too. Thats why i said 07.

But you listen to melodic trance and i can assure you that if you measure the dynamic range of one of those tracks you like versus a current timbaland production you are not going to see a big difference. Timbaland's tracks are absolutely stellar from a mixing perspective, but you wouldn't know, you've never heard any over a set of monitors that you are familiar with, if you have a pair you're used to checking reference material on.

I do have reference monitors, and i'll make sure to listen to a non-radio version of his stuff before commenting it again then.
but yes we can agree, most of the trance stuff is also overcompressed.

And sorry for blaming it to be something without thinking about that i've only heard it on the radio [to make it worse: with headphones.]

I'm quite fast in turns but sometimes even the best driver wipes out you know. (but sometimes i hit it damn good, and then i can move on to the next thing much faster)

I do like timbaland for getting that onto the business; even normal people around here know he is a producer.
