Musicians seem to be about the only group of people that I can find other people that don't follow sports.

i so hear you. Living in Oz, and not really being interested in football or rugby, or more than a passing interest in cricket, I have almost no small talk to make witht the average guy at a backyard bbq.

I'm not sure we'll be able to convince Beats Me of the joy in watching a whole 5 day test match. But it's also the perfect TV viewing for writing music as you only need to look up once in while to see how they're getting on.

As for football (soccer), I was never really into it as a kid, but I've been playing with my mates every week now for a couple of years and now I find I'm really enjoying watching professional matches.

I was listening a podcast of a talk radio program located in Southern California on my way to work this morning. The topic was people committing suicide and how selfish it is and why should we give respect to somebody who does that. Somebody called into to basically agree with the host. The caller then ended the call by praising whatever local sports team was doing well. Instead of the host saying "What the Hell does that have to do with the subject?" he decided to have a brief discussion on the local team and how well they were doing this season.

Now you tell me what other area of interest in this world where it's acceptable to unsmoothly transition from a discussion about suicide.

I was always the guy in the band that played after the game. I never understood sports or jocks at all. Still don't. Here's the irony. For the last twenty years I have been a freelance audio engineer working on television remote trucks. Along with concerts and music award shows, political events, corporate events, etc., I do a lot of sports. I find the sports television people to be a group of clueless egotistic alcoholics. They are positively insufferable! However, making about 70K a year just from the sports aspect of the business has allowed me to build a hell of a recording studio to do what my passion really is, making music.

I liked watching soccer and skiing. When i was young, i even was a fan of a club. But it all has become pure disgusting business. No honor, no roots, no deeper national identification. It has turned within the last 20 years completely into an ugly and dishonest showbusiness.
I don't understand how people can identify themselfes with pure marketing labels and companies.

Yep, I enjoyed playing football but have no interest in watching any sports...
