BEST. THREAD. EVER.

I just had to chime in. And I'm with Condra on the Kris-Kross thing...I can't believe no-one has mentioned Kraftwerk yet. They did a bunch of songs that sampled POWER TOOLS!!!

dont know if anyone has mentioned J Dilla - Donuts.

i think thats an amazing album, especially the way he turned an awful song like 10cc - 'Johnny don't do it' into one of the best beats ever made 'Waves'

10cc : http://youtube.com/watch?v=ItQLvgJ-4No

Waves : http://youtube.com/watch?v=DVb_W3GfQRk

and a fairly good example of how it might have been done :

PM Dawn's Set Adrift On Memory Bliss, which was basically the whole 'True' track by Spandau Ballet minus drums and vocals and their chilling rapping and a drum machine.

That Tom's Diner thing by DNA that took a very annoying Suzanne Vega acapello track and made it into a very annoying soul II soul sounding rhythm track with suzanne vega's annoying 'da da da da da da da da'.

As an old git it's nice to see Peter Gabriel and Yello get a mention.

To add to the historical perspective I would like to add a word for Frank Zappa and his work on the Synclavier (or "Barking Pumpkin Digital Gratification Consort" as he called it). Here's a random video of "Frank Zappa Composing on The Synclavier" found on google --> http://video.aol.com/video-detail/frank ... 3286954889

It was mentioned once in this thread, but I think it bears repeating:

"My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts"
Eno & David Byrne
1981

Pioneering work. Rarely have found sound vocal samples been integrated so well into the songs.

I listened to the re-issued, re-mastered CD recently, after not having listened to it in many years, & was really surprised at just how interesting all the sounds are. After to listening to decades filled with the music that it has spawned, it still sounds utterly fresh to my ears.

Furthermore, beyond all this sonic intrigue, lie some strong songs.

Check it.

Did they use a sampler on Bush Of Ghosts? or was it all done with tape splicing?

One record that must have influenced Eno and Byrne is Holger Czukay's Movies album released in 1979. All the "samples" are done with tape splicing techniques. There are quite a few clips from the album to be found on youtube, but worth checking out is this insane full length video of "Cool In The Pool" ->> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxwDQO4abwc This short clip from "Oh Lord Give Us More Money" ->> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1lSD9xY ... re=related and the awesome "Persian Love Song" --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=if5eTwai ... re=related

Two tape decks used in the following manner:

David Byrne, looking back on the recording of the album, said, "At that time there were no samplers, so the found vocals were inserted into the music by trial and error. We'd have two tape machines playing simultaneously, one containing the track and the other the vocal and, if the gods willed, which they often seemed to, there would be a serendipity, the vocal and the track would at least seem to feel like they belonged together, and it would be a 'take.' It was all 'played" and very seat-of-the-pants. There was none of the incremental tweaking and time-correcting that is possible with modern samplers and computers, so throwing the vocals against the tracks was in our case almost a performance."

The stuff Skinny Puppy was doing with samplers in the late 80s *still* sounds contemporary to me.
