Me too! Proper Lovecraft is hard to come by. You usually don't find it in anything claiming to be based on his work, but you can find it elsewhere.

Have you seen The Call Of Cthulhu (2005), directed by Andrew Leman & produced by The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society? It is filmed as if it were made in the 1920's, it's even silent with intertitles & a score. Inspired!

The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society also made The Whisperer In Darkness (2011), filmed in early 1930's style, but I haven't had seen it yet.

(2001) Directed by Stuart Gordon isn't really Lovecraftian, despite being based on the Lovectaft story but it is great fun! It's actually Lovecraft's 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth'

Phantasm
(1979) Directed by Don Coscarelli has a Lovecraftian blending of horror & science fiction, & is a wonderful film.

I think Lovecraft would have appreciated Pontypool (2008)

Yeah I remember watching it, probably nearly 20 years ago, and expecting just a shitty shoot em up and being surprised. It was only recently I realised it was based on Heinlein.

Me too. Succeeds as sci-fi, action, & parody!

On a completely different note, I feel the same way about American Psycho - it succeeds as both horror & comedy.
